HAMK IS PARTNER IN STRATEGIC INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE
Häme University of Applied Sciences, Finland, Feevale University, Brazil, and VIA University College, Denmark signed an alliance agreement on 17 May 2016 in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil.
This agreement is the step from the strategic partnership between the three universities to the international alliance. The partnership has already a long history of joint activities in education and research. The alliance is an important response to the national structural changes currently taking place within higher education in Finland.
In Finland, other strategic measures strengthening HAMK in higher education and research institution collaboration are FUAS (Federation of Universities of Applied Sciences between Häme University of Applied Sciences, Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Laurea University of Applied Sciences) and Luke (Natural Resources Institute Finland).
This new alliance with Feevale University and VIA University College strengthens the operations of HAMK. The universities of the new alliance are multidisciplinary and continuously develop themselves. The alliance has a total of 50,000 students. Feevale’s strong social responsibility and focus on environmental issues are according to HAMK’s profile. VIA is one of the most international higher education institutions in Denmark and it has close relations with regional business and industry.
The cooperative areas include a joint international expertise pool, strengthening research activities, developing a common virtual campus, export of education, and enterprise networks. The alliance supports student and staff mobility. In addition, the aim is to create international network-based research units.
Virtual working methods are make good use of in both education and research. E-learning makes it possible for students to develop their competencies in international student groups. The skills within the alliance form a strong foundation for multidisciplinary research and development projects. For example, circular economy and wellbeing are common interests.
Rector Pertti Puusaari says as follows: “This alliance is unique in Finnish higher education. HAMK can offer expertise in professional excellence, bioeconomy, smart services (wellbeing) and sheet metal. It is intended that our own operational area will benefit from the alliance. All three universities have agreed on our future goal. Now it is time to persistently proceed forward to achieve this goal.”
