What is Professional Teacher Education?
Professional teacher education is education that qualifies for teaching in Finland. The education gives the pedagogical qualification for all forms of education institutions. However, the education is directed at people who plan to work in teaching or who already work in teaching at vocational colleges or universities of applied sciences. The education can also be made use of in staff development tasks in companies and work communities, or in different expert positions requiring professional competences.
What qualifications are needed for teaching?
The teacher's pedagogical studies 60 credits (= Professional Teacher Education) are one part of the qualification requirements set for teachers in Finland, which vary depending on the education institution in which the person works as a teacher. To fulfil the qualification requirements, for example, a vocational teacher must have completed the education and work experience determined in decree 986/1998 in addition to the teacher's pedagogical studies. Lecturers in comprehensive and upper secondary schools must in turn have completed a Master's degree and a specified amount of studies in the subjects taught in addition to the teacher's pedagogical studies.
