We promised to tell you more about the results of our recent journal survey.  Here you go.

USAGE OF PRINTED JOURNALS IN HAMK LIBRARY – SURVEY RESULTS

VIHERPIHA

Lepaa, Mustiala and Forssa units were among the most eager to read.  In total some 250 journals were browsed.

We received 33 answers to our questionnaire.  In general the journal collections were appraised as wide and diverse both for study and keeping up-to-date purposes.  At the same time, many reminded us that we should not cut down on our present subscriptions.  We also received some new suggestions and we’ll look into them.  Unfortunately, we are not going to subscribe to Someron Lehti nor to Playboy Magazine even if they were on your wishing list  😉
Some of you wanted to have the possibility to borrow journal issues.  At this point we are not going to do that but we do remind you that in each library you can scan articles for free for your personal use.

In case you want to brush up (or build up) your Finnish language skills we are happy to let you know that ePress is on its way.  ePress contains almost all the significant Finnish newspapers, including for example Helsingin Sanomat and Aamulehti. The address to it would be:
https://www.epress.fi/

FEEDBACK ON JOURNALS FROM HAMK STAFF

We also carried out a journal collection assessment survey among Hamk staff.  We received 39 answers in total and 16 participants filled in open feedback.
We asked two questions: what journals the staff reads and what would they recommend for the students

These are the two most read journals within different fields of education:

Professional Teacher Education: Aikuiskasvatus and Ammattikasvatuksen aikakauskirja
Bioeconomy:    Maaseudun tulevaisuus and Metsälehti
Wellbeing: Hoitotiede and Janus
Technology: Rakennuslehti and Tekniikka & Talous
Entrepreneurship and Business: Talouselämä and Taloustaito

These journals the staff would recommend to the students:

Professional Teacher Education: Ammattikasvatuksen aikakauskirja and Aikuiskasvatus
Bioeconomy: Maaseudun tulevaisuus and Metsälehti
Wellbeing: Hoitotiede and Tutkiva hoitotyö
Technology:  Rakennuslehti and Tekniikka & Talous
Entrepreneurship and Business: Harvard Business Review and Talouselämä

The survey results showed that the staff mostly recommends the same journals they tend to read.

The staff left some open feedback and here we answer those comments.

Customer comment: “All the relevant regional newspapers should be available in each campus library.”
Library answer: We agree.  Together with HAMK’s Financial management the library has decided to subscribe to ePress from the beginning of 2018 at latest.  Since ePress contains almost all the relevant newspapers in Finland we are not only offering the presently subscribed newspapers but actually upgrading our service in multitudes.  At the same time we are ceasing the subscriptions to printed newspapers available in ePress.  There are five simultaneous users in ePress.

Customer comment:  ”Access to international article databases would enhance the research”
Library answer:  Please use Hamk Finna to look for both Finnish and international journals and journal full text.  We currently offer over 9 000 journals in Finna.  You can choose to search via individual databases like Ebsco, Emerald Insight, ProQuest BusinessSource, Cinahl or Science Direct, or you can use the federated search via Hamk Finna at:
https://hamk.finna.fi/Primo/Advanced

Customer comment:  “Customer and interest group magazines from industry are also good sources of information while offering commercials and advertisements.
Library answer: That is definitely true.  To some fields, they are more important than to others. In many cases, these kind of magazines are freely either available in Internet or to subscribe to.  Library will of course enhance the visibility and accessibility of any magazine or journal by cataloging it to Finna if requested.

Finally, thanks for all the participants!  For sure we’ll get back on this subject.  Meanwhile, please share your opinion on library collections or services with us.
In case you have questions on these journal surveys feel free to contact Kari Mikkonen at the library via e-mail.
