HAMK organized the first ever China-Finland Education Forum in China

Finnish educational know-how is highly regarded by the Chinese education officials and HAMK’s rectors were invited to take part in panel conversations as well as national TV interviews.

In support of the vocational education reform in China, HAMK organized the first ever China-Finland Education Forum together with IVEP, who is responsible for the reform in China. The event was held in Jinan, China at the end of September. Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and Education Ministry gave their support to the event. The Finnish delegation, invited by HAMK consisted of the representatives of three universities, three universities of applied sciences and seven vocational education institutions, as well as HAMK’s own delegation of experts. At the forum the Finnish participants introduced their organizations to the executives of IVEP.

The Finnish Ambassador to Beijing, Mr Jarmo Syrjälä took part in the forum as HAMK’s honoured guest. In his speech Mr. Syrjälä highlighted the effectiveness Finnish education system, the conception of education in Finland as well as the mutual benefits of educational co-operation between Finland and China.

China-Finland Education Forum organised by HAMK and IVEP was a part of World Education Day 2018 Conference. Chinese education officials as well as three Nobel Prize Laureates delivered opening speeches. The Chinese vice Education Minister took part in the conference. HAMK´s rector Mr. Pertti Puusaari took part in a panel conversation together with the Nobel Prize Laureates. The topic of the conversation was ´What are the next big things in education´. Mr. Puusaari highlighted the importance of teachers and teacher education in students´ wellbeing and in their lifelong learning . During the conference Mr. Puusaari and vice rector Mrs. Heidi Ahokallio-Leppälä were interviewed by the Chinese national TV broadcaster. HAMK’s rectors were asked, why Finland is a world leader in education. Both Mr. Puusaari and Mrs. Ahokallio-Leppälä concluded that Finnish teachers are the best in the world and our education system is based on student centeredness and equality.

The urge to further develop and reform education in China as well as need for internationalization became apparent in the speeches of Chinese representatives. Finnish educational know-how and pedagogy were particularly interesting to the Chinese counterparts. China wants to set guidelines for the future of education based on the examples set by Finnish education system. The Finnish delegation, lead by HAMK, gained knowledge and understanding on Chinese education structures as well on as cultural perceptions of learning and the role of teacher.
