Learn to take care of forests as they would be your own!

Forests are a vital source of wellbeing, adventures, job opportunities and raw material for several industries. In our degree programme, you will achieve an extensive knowledge in forestry, which highlights sustainable planning, caring and utilization of forest resources. And the best part of the studies is that they are widely done outdoors, in the fresh air of our demonstration forest! Pack your boots and head to Evo campus, the heart of foresty education.

Content of the studies

During the first study year, you will share the study objectives with others. You’ll learn more about sustainable forestry, forest measurement, timber harvesting and procurement, forest ecology and forest planning. You will also develop your work life and communication skills during your studies, and you will receive necessary tools to work as an entrepreneur.

After the first year, you can choose profiling studies according to your own interest. This a great way to mold the degree to suit your interests and future career plans! In the profiling studies, you can choose to deepen your knowledge for example in wood procurement, planning and management of forest resources and production of services in forestry, GIS, recreational usage of forests and renewable energy resources. Profiling studies can also be chosen from our other degree programmes in HAMK, or other higher education institutes in Finland or abroad.

Studying outdoors

In Sustainable Forest Management, you will study in Evo campus, both independently and in teams with other students. The aim is to spend less time inside in the classroom and more outside, in the demonstration forest. For example, a lecturer can give you a task in the classroom, and after you will go into the demonstration forest with other students to work on that task. Practical learning in the nature goes on throughout the year, but as seasons change the amount of time spent in the nature is modified. This means that in the winter when there is snow in the ground, you’ll spend less time outdoors.

Why study Sustainable Forest Management in HAMK?

  • Students and staff in Evo campus form a tight and warm community. No one is left alone, and everyone supports each other. Students grow to be professionals in their own industry, together.

  • Our demonstration forest of 1 800 ha offers a unique way to learn more about forestry. You get hands-on experience and the possibility to roam in forests as much as you like!

  • Finland is a pioneer in sustainable forestry. Forests are in an important position in our culture, and they are highly valued. Here you will get a degree from the very best of the branch.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is there something I must purchase in beforehand?

You need to have your own equipment for field work. This means safety shoes, helmet with safety class, overall or other durable and warm clothes. Without these equipment it is not possible to carry out field studies. Equipment costs max 1000 euros. In some special cases it is possible to borrow equipment.

Living in Evo campus?

Evo campus is the heart of forestry education and has been established already the year 1862, which makes it one of our oldest campuses. The campus’ long traditions give a great base for education that aims to answer all future needs of the forestry field.

As Evo campus is a rural location, it is important to recognize that the closest town with services such as grocery stores is located 20 km away. This means that moving to and from campus requires a car. There is a limited availability for public transport, but we are looking into organizing carpools to grocery stores etc for international students. Arriving to campus will be solved in co-operation with our staff members.

Also note, that on-campus accommodation offers very limited possibilities for families. The accommodation available are mostly dormitories, that are shared with other students. Read more about accommodation from here

Student selection criteria

Students are selected using following selection method:

  • admission on the basis of the International UAS Exam entrance examination

Entrance examination: International UAS Exam

International UAS Exam is a joint digital entrance exam of Finnish universities of applied sciences, used for selecting students to study programmes leading to a degree and conducted in English.

The entrance exam is a written online examination. The exam is organized on soon to be announced 2024.

In the online entrance examination, the applicants’ readiness for UAS studies are assessed. The entrance exam does not include any advance reading materials or pre-assignments.

Exam participants from outside of Finland can check the Finnish time e.g. with the Time and Date website: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/finland/helsinki

More detailed instructions and information on the date, duration and scoring of the entrance examination can be found at www.uasinfo.fi.

Pre-reading materials

There is no pre-reading material.

Entrance exam cooperation

Häme UAS participates in national entrance examination cooperation.

Universities of applied sciences in Finland organize International UAS exam in cooperation. Degree programmes belonging to the same entrance exam group accept entrance exams completed in other participating UAS.

NB: Häme UAS will not organize campus entrance examinations in the joint application 2024.

Individual arrangements for entrance examinations

Fill in the Application for individual arrangements in the International UAS Exam (opens 3 January 2024), with the necessary attachments, by 24 January 2024 at 15:00 (UTC/GMT+2). Your application for individual arrangements is processed in Häme University of Applied Sciences if you have applied for a degree programme that uses the International UAS Exam entrance examination and HAMK is first on your application form. HAMK will inform you by email on individual arrangements that you have been granted. If the decision is negative, reasons for rejection will be provided with the decision.

Requests for individual arrangements sent after the deadline are processed only in acute, exceptional cases. Individual arrangements cannot be granted if the request is submitted too late, with regard to the timetable of the entrance examination, or individual arrangements are otherwise deemed impossible to arrange. If the need for individual arrangements emerge after the end of the application period, submit the application for individual arrangements and contact by email HAMK Admission Services [admissions(at)hamk.fi] as soon as possible.

Required enclosures

Please enclose to your electronic form copies of certificates that support your request (e.g. medical certificate or equivalent statement on the nature of your disease or disability, or certificate on dyslexia or learning difficulty). Those who request support measures, such as additional time, on the grounds of dyslexia have to attach a statement of a trained special needs teacher, an expert psychologist, speech therapist or specialist medical doctor (e.g. child neurologist, neurologist or phoniatrician). The statement shall indicate that you need support measures for taking the exam due to dyslexia. The UAS may accept an equivalent decision made by The Finnish Matriculation Examination Board if it contains the granted support measures.

The validity of statements is assessed on a case-by-case basis depending on the persistence of disability, disease or learning difficulty. For dyslexia, only statements that have been obtained at the age of 16 or later are considered. Do not send original certificates but be prepared to present the originals at the start of your studies should you become accepted to the study programme. Information related to your health shall be kept secret (Section 24, Act on the Openness of Government Activities).

Notification on granted individual arrangements

The UAS responsible for the individual arrangements in the entrance examination will contact you by e-mail before the entrance examination, to agree upon practical arrangements. If you are not satisfied with the arrangements stated in the announcement, please contact the UAS in question.

The announcement on individual arrangements for the entrance exam is exam-specific and valid only in that particular entrance exam.

Student selection results

The student selection results of the joint application will be published by 31 May 2024 at the latest.
