Applying as degree student
Open studies offer a way to the degree studies
You can apply as degree student to HAMK on the basis of open university studies completed in a university of applied sciences in Finland.
Applicant who has completed 60 credits applicable to the degree is eligible for Bachelor's degree studies. Applicant who has an applicable higher education degree and two years of work experience after graduation and who has completed 10 credits (belonging to a 60 cr's degree) or 15 credits (belonging to a 90 cr's degree) applicable to the degree is eligible for Master's degree studies.
Right to study
The applicant gets the right to study when he or she is accepted as a student and confirms the study place and registers for the semester. The right to study period begins from that point. So the applicant needs to apply during the semester he or she wants to start the studies as a degree student.
Eligibility / Bachelor's degree
You are eligible for Bachelor's degree studies when you have completed 60 credits of open studies applicable to the degree you are applying to. You must have completed the studies in an Open University of Applied Sciences in Finland and you cannot apply with unfinished bachelor's degree studies.
Admission is based on the applicability of open studies, number of credits and academic performance.
Eligibility / Master's degree in Sustainable Technologies
You are eligible for Master's Degree studies when you have completed
- a relevant higher education degree
- insinööri (AMK)
- Bachelor of Engineering (UAS)
- insinööri (ylempi AMK)
- Master of Engineering
- Diplomi-insinööri
- qualification completed outside of Finland comparable to the above mentioned qualifications
- two years of work experience gained after completing the degree from the field you have graduated or from the field you are applying to, and
- 10 credits of open studies applicable to the degree you are applying to. You cannot apply with unfinished master's degree studies.

Work experience required for eligibility (Master's degree)
In addition to the required qualification, you need to have at least two years of work experience from the field of study of your higher education degree or from the field of study of the degree programme you are applying to. The work experience needs to be obtained after completing the higher education degree.
Notice: Work experience can be counted after completing a Finnish vocational college diploma (opistoaste) or a Finnish higher vocational diploma (ammatillinen korkea-aste). If you have completed a qualification comparable to these diplomas outside of Finland, please contact Admission services. The work experience must be from the field of study of your higher education degree or from the field of study of the degree programme you are applying to.
- The only kind of work experience accepted is one of which you have been given a testimonial by your employer.
- Entrepreneurship is accepted as work experience if you can provide a certificate of it given by a designated authority (in Finland i.e. a testimonial of YEL or MYEL insurance).
- A part-time job is converted into full-time so that 150 hours or 20 full-length working days (at least 7 hours per day) are equivalent to one month.
- The work experience does not have to be continuous or obtained under the same employer.
- Work placement or practical training are not counted towards work experience if they are included in the degree used in admission.
- You can prove your work experience abroad with a CV (curriculum vitae) and a letter of recommendation from your employer.
- Military service, non-military service or child-care leave are not counted towards work experience.
Language skills requirements
If your open UAS studies' tuition language has been other than English, HAMK can arrange an English language test to check your English skills if necessary.

Upload the following attachments to your application at Studyinfo.fi (at the latest within 7 days after submitting the application):
- an official transcript of records (studies completed in the open university)
- a proof of you language skills (if needed)
- copy of a document exempting you from paying tuition fees (if you have such document)
Required attachments / Master's degree studies
Upload the following attachments to your application at Studyinfo.fi (at the latest within 7 days after submitting the application):
- an official transcript of records (studies completed in the open university)
- copies of degree certificates and testimonials or CV (curriculum vitae) and a letter of recommendation (work experience abroad)
- proof of your language skills (if needed)
- an official Finnish, Swedish or English translation of the certificate/testimonial/letter of recommendation it is not written in one of these languages. The translation must have the translator’s signature and stamp.
- copy of a document exempting you from paying tuition fees (if you have such document)
The student selection is conditional until the original certificates have been checked.
Student Selection in Bachelor's Degree Studies
You can be admitted as a Bachelor's degree student when you have completed 60 credits of open studies applicable to the degree you are applying to. Admission is based on the applicability of open studies, academic performance, date of completion of studies, number of credits and group size.
Student Selection in Master's Degree Studies
You can be admitted as a Master's degree student when you have the eligibility for Master's degree studies and you have completed 10 credits (60 cr's degree) / 15 credits (90 cr's degree) of open studies applicable to the degree you are applying to.
Admission is based on the applicability of open studies, academic performance, date of completion of studies, number of credits and group size.
Studies completed in an open university of applied sciences
The studies completed in an open university of applied sciences (60 cr, 15 cr or 10 cr) may contain no more than 1/3 of credit transfers. You cannot apply as a degree student on the basis of studies completed in a university or in a higher education institute outside of Finland.
The applicability of the open studies to the degree will be evaluated. It will be beneficial if the applicant has completed open studies from the first academic year applicable to the degree. It will also be beneficial if the applicant has completed more credits than required.
For the Degree Programme in International Business the grade point average of the completed studies must be at least 3.0.
Student selection results and enrolment
During the academic year the student selections will be made within 3-4 weeks after the applicant has submitted the application and the enclosures to the Admission Services of HAMK. Applicant will be informed about the decision on student admission in writing.
Admitted applicants must confirm the study place and enrol to the academic year as instructed in the admission letter. The student selection of applicants failing to confirm the study place will be cancelled.
Appeal process
If you are not satisfied with the results of the student selection process, you may appeal in writing to the Examination Board of Häme University of Applied Sciences within 14 daysfrom the time you had the possibility of receiving information on student selection.
One place per student provision
You may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree during one academic term.
Tuition fees
Non-EU/EEA students
As a non-EU/EEA-citizen you are required to pay tuition fees for Bachelor’s degree studies.
The tuition fee must be paid at the time of confirming the study place. Please notice: tuition fees are charged directly by HAMK and should never be paid through third parties (i.e. educational agents).
You can be exempted from paying tuition fees if you:
- have an EU Blue Card granted in Finland
- have a continuous residence permit card in Finland, type A permit
- NB: Type A permit granted for studying in Finland (from 15 April 2022 onwards) doesn’t exempt student from paying tuition fee.
- have a permanent residence permit card in Finland, type P permit
- have an EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland
- have an EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence permit card in Finland (Type P-EU)
- have a Brexit residence permit card, Right of residence under the withdrawal agreement

have a Brexit residence permit card, Right of permanent residence under the withdrawal agreement
In order to be exempted from paying tuition fees, please attach a copy of one of the above-mentioned documents to your application at Studyinfo.fi. The document must be uploaded to your application within 7 days after submitting the application.

EU/EEA students
There will be no tuition fee for EU/EEA citizens. In order to be exempted from paying tuition fees you need to attach one of the following documents to your application at Studyinfo.fi:
- Passport or identity card to indicate the citizenship of EU/EEA/Switzerland (citizens of Finland are not required to provide proof of their citizenship as it will be verified from the population register)
The document must be downloaded to your application within 7 days after submitting the application.
