Right to Study
The right to study time begins when a student accepts the offered study place and enrols as present or absent for the academic year.
Right-to-study period
The regular completion time of Bachelor’s degree is 3.5 years (210 credits) or 4 years (240 credits). After that you have one extra year to complete your studies.
The regular completion time of Master’s degree is 2 years (60 credits) or 2.5 years (90 credits). After that you have one extra semester to complete your studies.
Scope of degree and right-to-study period

60 cr – 2,5 years
A student who have not enrolled for the academic year within the enrolment period will lose their right to study. Student needs to apply for reinstatement of right to study to continue the studies (see: Neglecting enrolment).
Discretionary extension period
A student who has not completed the studies within the right-to-study period can be granted an extension to complete the degree. The extension can be granted due to special causes for the maximum of one year. Application for extension period needs to be done before the right to study time expires.
Applying for extension period
- Make an appointment with your study counsellor in time before your right-to-study period ends and make a plan to complete the degree.
- Apply for extension in the spring or at the end of the year before your right-to-study period ends.
- Deliver the application to Student services, studentservices[at]hamk.fi (Application for extension of study right).
- Pay the application processing fee

The application processing fee is 50 euros. The fee is based on Government decree 1440/2014, 3§: GO TO THE PAYMENT FORM
If you don’t complete your degree during the extension period you can continue your studies at HAMK’s Open University. You can also apply for the right to study again (see: Re-applying for right to study)
Re-applying for right to study
HAMK’s former student who has started studies 1.8.2015 or after that and has not completed the degree, may apply for readmission to complete the degree. Readmission can be granted only once and extension period is not granted.
Who can apply?
- You are a former student of HAMK and have started your studies on 1.8.2015 or after that,
- you have a maximum of 60 (Bachelor´s degree) or 30 (Master’s degree) ECTS credits uncompleted degree studies left and
- your studies can be included in the degree and it is possible to complete the degree at HAMK.
If you don’t manage to complete the degree during the readmission period you can continue your studies as Open UAS student and complete your degree studies.
If you have more than 60 (Bachelor´s degree) or 30 (Master’s degree) credits to complete you can begin your studies as Open UAS student and apply later for right to study (see: HAMK’s students at Open UAS after the right to study period has expired).
If you have started your studies before 1.8.2015 and you meet the requirements you can apply in HAMK’s separate application on the basis of uncompleted higher education degree at Studyinfo.fi.

Tuition fee
There will be a tuition fee for non EU/EEA students who have started their studies on 1 August 2017 or after that. See: Tuition fee and scholarships.
HAMK's students at Open UAS after the right to study period has expired
If your right to study period has expired and you have more than 60 (Bachelor´s degree) or 30 (Master’s degree) credits to complete you can begin the studies as Open UAS student and apply later for right to study.
Fees for HAMK students
- 250 € / one semester
- 400 € / academic year
- You can also pay 15 €/one credit if that is cheaper than a time-based fee.
The time-based fee does not depend on the number of credits. Fee is charged after enrolment.
Enrolment
- Discuss your study plan with your guidance counsellor.
- Open the enrolment form
- Authenticate
- You can authenticate through the Suomi.fi service by using online banking codes, a mobile certificate, or a certificate card.
- Only in exceptional cases, i.e. if you don’t have any authentication method suitable for the Suomi.fi service of you have technical problems with the authentication, you can choose an alternative enrolment form and not to use the authentication.
- Fill in the enrolment form
- Select the target: I’m a former HAMK’s degree student
- Choose payment method from the list
- Indicate which studies you are taking in the open university or attach an appendix where they are listed (these must be agreed with the guidance counsellor in advance)
- Proceed by saving the information
- You will receive an automatic confirmation email about your enrolment.
Once your enrolment has been processed, you will get further information by email. Please note that as new student, you will receive a new student number and you will no longer to be able to access the Pakki view of your previous degree studies.
