Right to Study

Student will have the right to study when he/she accepts the offered study place. The right-to-study period begins when the student enrols as present for the first time.

The regular completion period of Bachelor’s degree with 210 credits is 3.5 years (60 credits/year) and degree with 240 credits 4 years. After the regular completion period you can have one extra year to complete your studies. The right-to-study period is one year longer than the regular completion period.

The regular completion period of Master’s degree with 60 credits is 2 years and a degree with 90 credits 2.5 years. After the regular completion period you can have one extra semester to complete your studies. The right-to-study period is one semester longer than the regular completion period.

Extension period

A student who has not completed his/her studies within the right-to-study period can be granted an extension for special reasons to complete the degree.
Guidelines concerning the extension period:

  • You must apply for the extension period before the right to study expires. 
  • The extension period will be granted for maximum of one year.
  • You must make a realistic study plan for the extension period.
  • If you don’t complete your degree during the extension year you can continue your studies via HAMK’s open studies.
  • If you are not granted an extension to complete the degree you may apply for the right to study after a one semester break (look also Granting of right to study).

Applying for the extension period

You must apply for an extension before the right to study expires. You can apply for the right to study two times during the year, in the spring and at the end of the year. You will be informed on the schedules at your unit. Submit the application to the student affairs office with the following attachments:

  • statement concerning completion of studies 
  • progress of studies and study plan
  • reasons for application (free-form)
  • the receipt of payment (application processing fee)

Make an appointment with the study counsellor in time before the right to study ends. Fill in the statement concerning completion of studies with your study counsellor. You will get the progress of studies report and the study plan from the student affairs office.

Return the application of right to study to the local student affairs office.
The application processing fee is 50 euros. The fee is based on Government decree 1440/2014.

Granting of right to study

A former student of a higher education institution can apply for the right to study to complete his/her studies. The Head of Degree Programme may grant a right to study for special reasons. Granting of right to study – guidelines

  • A right to study can be granted if the student has no more than 60 cr (bachelor´s degree programmes) or 30 cr (master’s degree programmes) of his/her studies left.
  • When a student has resigned or his/her period of right to study has expired he/she can apply for the right to study to complete the studies after one semester break.
  • When a student has not been granted an extension to complete his/her degree, he/she may apply for the right to study after one semester break.
  • Before the decision the staff evaluates the possibilities to complete the studies in the degree programme (provision of courses, time of former studies).
  • If the student has more than 60 cr (bachelor´s degree programmes) or 30 cr (master’s degree programmes) of his/her studies left he/she can study at the Open University of Applied Sciences and apply later for the right to study.

Applying for the right to study

There is no application period for applying for the right to study. The application can be submitted anytime with the following attachments:

  • statement concerning completion of studies 
  • progress of studies and study plan
  • reasons for application (free-form)
  • the receipt of payment (application processing fee)
