Open merkit – Teacher’s Badges

Project information

The aim of the Open merkit (teacher’s badges) project was to create and establish a national digital badges system to support the recognition and acknowledging of professional competences of vocational teachers during their teacher studies as well as their entire professional career. 

Until now, there has been no uniform badges system or process in Finland; instead, different organizations have launched several parallel badges systems for different purposes. A uniform system will provide a comparable basis and clear criteria for the recognition of vocational teachers’ professional competences.

The project is connected to the national reform of vocational education, supporting the changing role of a teacher. The project is conducted in collaboration between all schools of professional/vocational teacher education in Finland. The method used is based on an iterative process of agile development, comprising of quick prototyping and piloting, and continuous feedback and modification.

The digital badges system is piloted in the project, and it will be implemented in relevant educational institutions and educational administration.

The system to be created will consist of:

  • a shared administrative model which is applicable across educational sectors.
  • a shared structure, model, and awarding criteria for badges.
  • a quality assurance model.
  • a piloted and implemented badges collection for digital competencies.
  • shared guidelines for future expansion of the badges system.
  • guidelines for graphical design
  • a shared network-based process model
  • a national badges portal
  • guidelines for resourcing, responsibilities, assessment and guidance.

The project was conducted in collaboration between all schools of professional/vocational teacher education in Finland, together with the Vocational College of Ostrobothnia and Åbo Akademi University.

Project time: 27.12.2017-31.3.2020.

Budget: 370 000 €
