What goes around, comes around! Create a sustainable tomorrow with technology.

Combine ICT engineering and circular economy in our degree programme, where you will learn about data-analytics, the Internet of Things and smart technologies that you can use to create sustainable products and services of the future. With sustainable technology, you can have a critical impact on preventing climate change by utilising natural resources responsibly for people’s wellbeing.

Objectives

You learn to use information and communication technology to advance circular economy and sustainable development in our global society.

Qualification provided by education

You will become an expert on circular economy who can work in manufacturing, engineering and design offices or public sector for example as a circular economy engineer or data analyst.

Structure of studies

In our Information and Communication Technology, Circular Economy programme, you combine an engineer’s information technology studies with circular economy that helps to develop our society.

You get a strong basic knowledge in data analytics, IoT, smart systems, sensors, cloud services and how to use them to benefit circular economy. At the same time, you learn about sustainable products and services that utilise renewable natural resources.

Smart and ecologically sustainable systems are needed in all fields of industries. That’s why you get to do real corporate development projects with students from other fields in international environments. Our business projects have been about water, energy and waste management, material efficiency and sustainable utility of natural resources.

Earlier our students have created for example a hologram that tracks water consumption, helped local businesses with data-analytics and developed new ways to utilise motion sensors and leftover textiles.

Specialization options

You can complete your core studies with studies from for example 3D modelling and printing, machine learning and AI or global sustainability. In 3D modelling our students have designed and printed for example wind turbines that can produce enough ecological energy to charge a phone.

Your studies include work placement and a thesis. In your work placement you have an opportunity to practise in real-life working environments in companies. In your thesis you research a subject that interests you in an analytical and solution-oriented way, often for a company in your own field.

Study Paths – Open Studies Leading to a Degree

In our Study Paths, you will complete studies that are part of a degree program as a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, alongside degree students. Once you have completed the required amount of studies with the necessary grades, you can apply to become a degree student and continue your studies to completion as usual. Check more information:

Students outside of Finland: As Open University Studies are not leading to a degree it is not possible to get a residence permit only for that purpose.

You will study approximately eight hours a day, five days a week – lessons take place Mon-Fri, between 8am and 4 pm. Studying consists of lessons and lectures, exercises and projects, visits and visitors, independent work and group work, getting and giving feedback

The group starting in autumn 2024 will begin their studies on August 20, 2024.

Full-time studies as contact lessons are part of HAMK’s Studymode 8-16. You can read more about our approach to studying here:

Studies tailored to you

Your degree consists of 240 credits and includes four core elements:

The core competence studies, or core competence modules as we call those, form the foundation of your degree and professional skills. These studies are designed to support your development as a professional in your field and provide a solid groundwork for future elective studies

In core competence studies you learn about subjects like digitalization in circular economy, data analytics and smart sensor systems.

Part of your degree consists of profiling competence modules, enabling you to build expertise in your chosen direction according to your own goals. These studies offer opportunities to broaden, deepen, and enhance professional skills and personal development.

Profiling studies include moduls like 3D modelling and printing, Machine learning & AI and Global Sustainability.

The extent of the work placement is 30 credits. Work placement should be carried out at least in two parts.

Your thesis is a development or research project you work on towards the end of your studies. It helps you get better at what you’ve learned and shows how you can use that knowledge. It’s worth 15 credits, and you get to pick a topic that interests you and fits your career plans. It aims at solving problems emerging from the workplace. We encourage you to choose a real problem to solve from a company, to put your skills into practice and create new solutions for your industy.

As a student at HAMK, you can tailor your degree to suit you. You have the option to choose various studies from us and around the world, and complete the required studies in different ways.

Frequently asked questions

From here you can find answers to frequently asked questions about Information and Communication Technology, Circular Economy programme!

Circular economy is sustainable growth and development of the world. It’s a way to utilise already existing resources and materials more efficiently. Instead of creating products and services from new materials, we can utilise already existing services more diversely and reuse for example waste materials in new ways. You can read more about in Sitra’s website. https://www.sitra.fi/en/topics/a-circular-economy/

No, you don’t! There are no requirements for prior knowledge for this programme. You learn everything you need during the studies. Earlier knowledge can be useful but more important is a positive attitude towards learning new things.

The future looks bright. ICT is a diverse choice and circular economy opens even more doors. ICT is used in every field and circular economy is a rising trend, so knowledge of that is needed in all fields across the world.

You can work while you’re studying but it’s important to think what you everyday life is and how studying and working go with other parts of your life. In full-time studies you study mostly during the days and in part-time studies, mostly at night. You can read more about the different forms of studying here.

Sustainable development is a global thing. In the programme you will explore the topic’s international point of view through different projects and working students from other English programmes. If you want, you can do your internship or part of your studies abroad.
