Promoting openness

Openness in HAMK

We advance open science and research and develop the openness of education and other HAMK activities in various ways.

We are committed to following the Declaration for Open Science and Research (Finland) 2020–2025 and national recommendations and guidelines for open science. Promoting openness is an important goal in HAMK’s strategy and HAMK implements it in its research, development and innovation activities and in teaching. HAMK’s strategy is supported by HAMK’s principles of openness (please see below), policy for research data management in HAMK, Good data management practices in HAMK and HAMK’s own policy for open learning (in Finnish only). The realization of matters and goals listed in these documents is evaluated regularly.

The open science in HAMK is directed by HAMK’s principles of openness, aforementioned policies and HAMK’s own guidelines (are found below). As an addition, detailed instructions for open science can be found on HAMK’s intranet (requires logging in with HAMK staff ID). The mission and goals of the Declaration for Open Science and Research (Finland) 2020–2025 have been considered when drafting HAMK’s directional documents.

Steps for open science and research in HAMK

  1. HAMK endorses the strategic goals for open science and research defined by the research community in its own strategies and directing, with consideration for the characteristics of its organization.
    • Promoting open science and research is an important goal in HAMK’s strategy.
  2. HAMK supports and encourages its members to attain the objectives and goals of the policies in their everyday work.
    • HAMK has created systematic processes to increase knowledge of open science.
    • HAMK has integrated guidance related to open science as an integral part of the thesis process and the services for RDI projects.
  3. HAMK actively participates in the national open science and research coordination activities.
    • People from HAMK are actively participating in both the national coordination group for open science of The Federation of Finnish Learned Societies and in the universities of applied sciences’ open RDI and teaching -network and its national steering group.
    • HAMK is participating closely in the RUN European University’s open science network by appointing two staff members to be ambassadors of open science.

Our principles of openness

  • We are committed to promoting the principles of open science and research and we do so in collaboration with both national and international parties.
  • The research data produced at HAMK and connected with published results is by default open and available for shared use.
  • Research projects are required to make a data management plan which includes the principles of open data and takes into account the protection of confidential information, data security, privacy protection, and appropriate disposal of data, in accordance to legislation and HAMK guidelines.
  • HAMK offers an infrastructure for research data management in collaboration with national and international parties. The infrastructure includes tools and services for searching, using, sharing, and describing data.
  • HAMK staff is recommended to publish primarily in open access publications. Other publications will be parallel archived to Theseus open repository.
  • HAMK students are recommended to deposit their theses into Theseus.
  • Teaching staff is encouraged to openly share their educational material.
  • The support services for open RD&I guide HAMK staff members at different phases of research process and, when needed, offer training to complement the national open science education and training.
  • A fee may be charged for data sets processed for the use of business and communal actors.

Each member of the university of applied sciences community is responsible for following good research ethics, responsible conduct of research (by The Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK), law, contracts and instructions given by the institution.

  1. Each member of HAMK community is responsible for the legality and ethicality of the material they produce.
  2. When it comes to thesis and other research and development projects that are connected to studies, thesis instructor will make sure that the student has familiarized themselves with responsible conduct of research.
  3. The project’s responsible manager or project manager is liable for responsible conduct of research during the whole process.
  4. Individuals are responsible for acting out agreed operating practices.

Who is affected by open science in HAMK?

Everyone in HAMK. Each researcher, project participant, teacher, student, people in varying expert tasks.
HAMK is committed to promoting openness and cooperates in it with national and international operatives. HAMK’s ambition until 2030 is openness as HAMK’s shared operations model, which is reflected through all operatives. To be able to reach the goals of openness, HAMK is ensuring that the principles of RDI activities are being realized as a natural part of the institution’s processes and in the daily work of people of HAMK.

HAMK wants to offer researchers, staff, and students possibilities to increase their competency related to openness. HAMK is actively offering guidance in openness for students and staff by organizing versatile trainings and events.
To ensure adequate competencies in promoting openness, HAMK is actively participating in national cooperation in the different sectors of developing openness. HAMK’s RDI support team has representatives in all of the Open science expert panels coordinated by The Federation of Finnish Learned Societies: culture of open scholarship, open data, open access and open education.

HAMK is also working in close cooperation with other universities of applied sciences to promote open RDI activities (for example universities of applied sciences’ network of open RDI activities and teaching).

How do we promote openness?

  1. in the strategy and by principles,
  2. by a functional management and support structure,
  3. by up-to-date policies related to research data and open education,
  4. by functional and up-to-date instructions,
  5. by systematic and functional RDI service models,
  6. by active dialogue with HAMK research units,
  7. with diverse trainings and
  8. by actively following the national and international development.

The RDI support team of HAMK is offering support for anyone in HAMK when it comes to openness. The RDI support team has experts from library and information services, strategic communications, project services, and IT and information management services.

What does openness mean?

Openness is a central principle in science and research. It aims for the research results to be more transparent, have an easier repeatability and a greater social impact. Open science and research can be seen as a continuum, which covers the whole research process and the culture of how research is conducted. Open science and research help the research results to be accessed by other researchers quicker, so that the results can be used more efficiently and in a more diverse way.

Open RDI activities in HAMK in short

In HAMK, open science and research is called open RDI activities, which means utilizing open operation models in HAMK’s research, development and innovation activities and teaching. HAMK’s open RDI activities are based on FAIR principles in managing the life cycle of RDI materials.

The goal in HAMK’s open RDI activities is that the methods used, data, results and products are open for use by anyone, within the restrictions set by research ethics and law (for example: confidentiality, trade secrets, material to be kept secret and material protected by copyright). The practices of HAMK’s open RDI activities make it possible for enterprises, decision-makers, and citizens to participate in research. These practices include open access of publications, opening research process, planning data management, and ensuring further use of data.
