Build a strong foundation for your career in construction!

Become a construction professional with a handle on the latest design and production technologies. In our Construction Engineering programme you learn to design durable and sustainable structures. You get great language skills and international know-how which makes it possible for you to work anywhere in the world.

You will learn about structural engineering and the design of load-bearing structures. You learn the latest design, production and management techniques and how to apply them to practical situations in working life.

Qualification provided by education

You will become a construction engineer with a focus on structural engineering. You can work with constructing new premises, repairing existing structures or project management in Finland and abroad for example in an engineering design office. Your daily tasks can involve structural design, product development or for example supervision in an official capacity.

Structure of studies

In Construction Engineering you focus on structural engineering and the design of load-bearing structures. Understanding of the structures and building information modelling (BIM) skills play an important role. These skills are valued in the field and will help your future career in construction.

You learn about construction technology, structural systems in buildings and how to plan a building project. You get to dive into the mechanics, mathematics, technical drawing and CAD. You also get an understanding of 3D visualisation and the necessary IT skills.

Here at HAMK you learn through practice with actual engineering cases and teamwork. For example, in 2022 new Construction Engineering students began their studies with a team competition on who designed and built the most polished and durable wooden bridge.

During your studies you gain the knowledge needed for future sustainable development solutions in the field. By applying your expertise in material choices, optimization, repairability and circular economy you impact the life cycle and the economical, ecological and social sustainability of construction.

Specialization options

After you complete the core studies that are the base for the expertise as a construction engineer, you can deepen your knowledge with profiling studies. They include topics like concrete structures, structural design and apartment buildings. In addition, you can choose optional studies from any study areas you are interested in.

Your studies include work placement and a thesis. In your work placement you have an opportunity to practise in real-life working environments in companies. In your thesis you research a subject that interests you in analytical and solution-oriented way, often for a company in your own field.

As the degree is implemented in English, you have a chance to upgrade your English communication skills, as well as practice working in multicultural teams already during your studies.

Study Paths – Open Studies Leading to a Degree

In our Study Paths, you will complete studies that are part of a degree program as a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, alongside degree students. Once you have completed the required amount of studies with the necessary grades, you can apply to become a degree student and continue your studies to completion as usual.

Note: There are no Study Path seats available for the Construction Engineering Degree Programme in autumn 2024.

Students outside of Finland: As Open University Studies are not leading to a degree it is not possible to get a residence permit only for that purpose.

Study Methods

Full-time Studies, Contact Lessons

You will study together with your student group on weekdays Monday to Friday at Hämeenlinna campus. Studying is equivalent to working at a job: the student is present and works together with others in a diverse way.

The studies include e.g. traditional lectures, laboratory work, working in the groups, visits to companies and project work.

The first day of studies for the group starting in autumn 2024 will be August 19, 2024.

Full-time studies as contact lessons are part of HAMK’s Studymode 8-16. You can read more about our approach to studying here:

As a student of Construction Engineering, your home campus is Hämeenlinna University Centre.

Hämeenlinna University Centre

Our evolving, growing, and modern main campus, Hämeenlinna University Centre, brings together thousands of students and hundreds of employees. Across the expansive campus area, there are versatile facilities and services for studies across various fields as well as for research work.

The Hämeenlinna campus offers around 30 degree programs and serves as the home campus for all of HAMK’s research units. Additionally, the university center provides excellent facilities for organizing various events for both internal and external participants, resulting in frequent activity and bustling events on campus.

Studies tailored to you

Your degree consists of 240 credits and includes four core elements:

The core competence studies, or core competence modules as we call those, form the foundation of your degree and professional skills. These studies are designed to support your development as a professional in your field and provide a solid groundwork for future elective studies

In core competence studies you will learn about building technology, construction materials, sustainable and healthy buildings and fundamentals of structural design. Also, you learn about how to plan a building project.

Part of your degree consists of profiling competence modules, enabling you to build expertise in your chosen direction according to your own goals. These studies offer opportunities to broaden, deepen, and enhance professional skills and personal development.

Profiling competence studies include for example such topics as concrete structures, steel structures, structural design and apartment buildings.

Your studies include work placement periods with a total duration of 20 weeks / 5 months. The work placement gives you experience in working life and you get to know the guidelines, working conditions and production methods of your own profession.

Your thesis is a development or research project you work on towards the end of your studies. It helps you get better at what you’ve learned and shows how you can use that knowledge. It’s worth 15 credits, and you get to pick a topic that interests you and fits your career plans. It aims at solving problems emerging from the workplace. We encourage you to choose a real problem to solve from a company, to put your skills into practice and create new solutions for your industy.

As a student at HAMK, you can tailor your degree to suit you. You have the option to choose various studies from us and around the world, and complete the required studies in different ways.
