Electrify the future with smart and sustainable automation!

Learn to create an energy efficient future with renewable energy, sustainable manufacturing and smart living. In Electrical and Automation Engineering programme you learn to develop ecologically sustainable electrical and automation systems. This constantly evolving field offers you interesting design opportunities and excellent chance of employment.

Objectives

You learn to develop energy efficient electrical and automation systems and solutions. You learn to utilise new technologies like simulation, virtualisation and robotics in different ways.

Qualification provided by education

You will become an electrical and automation engineer to the energy or manufacturing industries. Your tasks could include for example design, production or sales as you work as a Design Engineer, an Automation Designer or an Electrical Designer.

Structure of studies

In our Electrical and Automation Engineering programme you familiarise yourself with Finland’s electricity generation and distribution, energy systems in buildings and energy efficiency for example in real estates.

You learn to apply information technology, electrical engineering, automation and robotics through practise in different projects and by working in our modern laboratory environments. You get yourself acquainted with designing and utilising electrotechnical equipment and systems with safety in mind. You learn to test automation in new subjects using logic programming, micro controllers and cloud computing.

Ecologically sustainable thinking is an important part of your studies. With electrical and automation technology you can create energy for a more sustainable future and advance sustainable development in manufacturing.

Specialization options

After you have completed the core studies, you can choose studies to deepen your knowledge based on your career goals. Your options include for example modern technology applications, process automation, product automation and smart home.

Your studies include work placement and a thesis. In your work placement you have an opportunity to practise in real-life working environments in companies. In your thesis you research a subject that interests you in analytical and solution-oriented way, often for a company in your own field.

For Students living in Finland

Study Paths – Open Studies Leading to a Degree

In our Study Paths, you will complete studies that are part of a degree program as a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, alongside degree students. Once you have completed the required amount of studies with the necessary grades, you can apply to become a degree student and continue your studies to completion as usual. Check more information:

Students outside of Finland: As Open University Studies are not leading to a degree it is not possible to get a residence permit only for that purpose.

Finland is a great place to study! Here are some information for international applicants:

Study Methods

Full-time Studies, Contact Lessons

In full-time studies you will study about eight hours a day and five days a week. The education is arranged as a general rule on HAMK’s Valkeakoski campus.

The study progresses with a regular rhythm with your own student group. During the working week, the teaching is diverse — it includes lectures, exercises, visits, group work, laboratory exercises, projects for work life and feedback on your own work.

If you have previous skills in the field, we will build you a personal curriculum that you can use to speed up your studies.

Full-time studies as contact lessons are part of HAMK’s Studymode 8-16. You can read more about our approach to studying here:

Valkeakoski Campus

A genuinely international learning environment can be found in Valkeakoski! Our campus located in the South Pirkanmaa region is modern and community-oriented. Within the campus corridors, you’ll encounter classmates from around the world as the educational offerings include both international, English-taught programs and Finnish-taught programs.

The study environment is comfortable, offering various spaces for both teaching and independent work. Additionally, at the Valkeakoski campus, there are facilities like the HAMK Gaming Lab for students’ gaming activities and a studio for video production.

Studies tailored to you

Your degree consists of 240 credits and includes four core elements:

The core competence studies, or core competence modules as we call those, form the foundation of your degree and professional skills. These studies are designed to support your development as a professional in your field and provide a solid groundwork for future elective studies

You core studies include for example automation programming, energy efficiency and data collection.

Part of your degree consists of profiling competence modules, enabling you to build expertise in your chosen direction according to your own goals. These studies offer opportunities to broaden, deepen, and enhance professional skills and personal development.

In your profiling studies you get to study process and production automation, AI and smart homes to name a few.

The degree includes a work placement of approximately 5 months. The work placement can be completed abroad as well.

In the work placement students get to apply the theory of their own field of studies to the practices of working life.

Your thesis is a development or research project you work on towards the end of your studies. It helps you get better at what you’ve learned and shows how you can use that knowledge. It’s worth 15 credits, and you get to pick a topic that interests you and fits your career plans. It aims at solving problems emerging from the workplace. We encourage you to choose a real problem to solve from a company, to put your skills into practice and create new solutions for your industy.

As a student at HAMK, you can tailor your degree to suit you. You have the option to choose various studies from us and around the world, and complete the required studies in different ways.
