Engineer the cities we live in.

Imagine a city with smart planning, smooth transport systems, and clean and low-carbon infrastructure. Now imagine you can create it. That can become a reality in our Degree Programme in Sustainable Urban Design (B.Eng.), where you learn to shape mobility services, plan resource-wise infrastructure, and use data and technology to plan sustainable cities.

Objective

You will learn to design environmentally friendly urban environments and transport systems using tools like service design, AI and data analysis.

Qualification provided by education

You become an engineer who can design sustainable cities with a specialisation in mobility, infrastructure or data management. You will work with professionals from different fields and act as a specialist in sustainable design in international companies in Finland or abroad.

Structure of studies

Your studies centre around urban environments and how these can be used to promote peoples’ and the planet´s wellbeing. You will learn to engineer cities that are equitable, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable. Within the programme, you will learn about creating safe and resilient cities by focusing on infrastructure, mobility, and the use of data in urban design.

During your studies, you will combine creativity with cutting-edge technology. You will learn to apply artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), data analysis, data modelling and visualisation as well as service design in urban systems.

During your studies, you will apply your knowledge and skills in projects with our partner cities and companies, working with students and professionals from diverse fields. The degree programme collaborates with the city of Riihimäki to facilitate learning in sustainable urban design.

Specialization options

You can deepen your knowledge by choosing to specialize in one of the three fields:

  • Developing sustainable mobility service
  • Innovating sustainable urban infrastructure
  • Applying data technologies in urban planning, management, and maintenance.

Your studies at HAMK will include work placement and a thesis. In your thesis, you research a subject that interests you.

Study Paths – Open Studies Leading to a Degree

In our Study Paths, you will complete studies that are part of a degree program as a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, alongside degree students. Once you have completed the required amount of studies with the necessary grades, you can apply to become a degree student and continue your studies to completion as usual.

Students outside of Finland: As Open University Studies are not leading to a degree it is not possible to get a residence permit only for that purpose.

3 reasons to study in Sustainable Urban Design!

You gain applied skills in engineering to build and maintain sustainable cities.

You choose your specialisation in infrastructure, mobility, or data based on your professional interests and desired career path.

You can contribute needed skills for a transition to a more sustainable future on an urbanizing planet.

Studying in Finland

Finland is a great place to study! Here are some information for international applicants:

Study Methods

Full-time Studies, Contact Lessons

You study at campus usually five days a week. Your studies will progress with your student group.

The first day of studies will be on August 20, 2024.

Full-time studies as contact lessons are part of HAMK’s Studymode 8-16. You can read more about our approach to studying here:

Campus

As a student of Sustainable Urban Design, your home campus is Riihimäki Campus.

Riihimäki Campus

Diverse expertise in technology, robotics, and the field of traffic – all of this you’ll find at the Riihimäki campus! The campus offers a range of engineering programs in both Finnish and English, graduating versatile professionals for the future.

In addition to teaching, the campus conducts extensive research work. It provides excellent facilities for both theoretical and practical studies and research. There’s a diverse range of spaces, from the engineering workshop to the auditorium and from the video studio to computer labs. For instance, the use of 3D printers and various robots in studies significantly supports hands-on learning.

Studies tailored to you

Your degree consists of 240 credits and includes four core elements:

The core competence studies, or core competence modules as we call those, form the foundation of your degree and professional skills. These studies are designed to support your development as a professional in your field and provide a solid groundwork for future elective studies

In core competence studies, you learn about urban infrastructure and mobility, urban ecosystems and data analytics – and more!

Part of your degree consists of profiling competence modules, enabling you to build expertise in your chosen direction according to your own goals. These studies offer opportunities to broaden, deepen, and enhance professional skills and personal development.

The degree includes a work placement of approximately 5 months. The work placement can be completed abroad as well.

In the work placement students get to apply the theory of their own field of studies to the practices of working life.

Your thesis is a development or research project you work on towards the end of your studies. It helps you get better at what you’ve learned and shows how you can use that knowledge. It’s worth 15 credits, and you get to pick a topic that interests you and fits your career plans. It aims at solving problems emerging from the workplace. We encourage you to choose a real problem to solve from a company, to put your skills into practice and create new solutions for your industy.

As a student at HAMK, you can tailor your degree to suit you. You have the option to choose various studies from us and around the world, and complete the required studies in different ways.
