My first year at HAMK as a Nursing student

In autumn 2025, Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) launched its new English-language Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Health Care, Nursing. With studies taking place at the Hämeenlinna campus, this degree programme aims to address the growing demand for qualified nursing professionals in Finland and beyond. We asked a couple of questions from one of the Nursing students, Milginta Zajankauskaite from Lithuania.

How has your first year been?

My first study year has been really fun and interesting! Everything felt fresh and exciting. Most of the time, I’ve been genuinely happy and curious. Only in November, I felt a bit down — but that’s pretty normal during that time of year in Finland.

How have you gotten involved with student culture?

There are so many different student events going on all the time. If I have time, I try to attend them. They’re a great way to meet other students, take a break from homework, and maybe even collect a patch for your overalls! I really love overalls — they’re such a fun and unique part of the student culture here.

What has been the best thing about studying in HAMK?

The people — definitely the teachers and the rest of the HAMK staff. They’re so supportive and easy to approach. You really feel like they care about your progress and well-being.

What do you like about Finnish culture? Does anything feel familiar you?

I love the sauna culture, the concept of sisu, and the strong value of equality. These things make Finnish culture feel very grounded. Also, I find Lithuanian and Finnish cultures surprisingly similar. In both places, we may not talk much with our neighbors, but we still greet strangers in the forest. It’s a quiet but warm kind of friendliness.

What would you like to say to people thinking of applying to Nursing degree programme?

Follow your own path. People might try to encourage or discourage you from this profession, but in the end, it’s your decision. Nursing can have a big impact on your life. It’s not always easy, but if it feels right for you, trust that feeling. Listen to yourself — not the noise around you.
