IT Instructions for Students

Instructions for supporting your studies
This page contains practical instructions that will help you in your everyday life at HAMK. You will find instructions for utilizing the campus wireless network, printing, and using your own device in your studies (BYOD).

Using your own computer in studying (BYOD)

All students must have their own laptop (BYOD or Bring Your Own Device).

HAMK has a comprehensive wireless network (WLAN), to which you can connect your own laptop.

Higher education eduroam network – primary

You can acces the eduroam network with your own username (username@student.hamk.fi) and password. The network is available in most Finnish universities and many European universities. Through the wireless eduroam network, you can access the university’s IT services easiest.

HAMK’s other wireless networks for students

The public wireless network is called HAMKvisitor, for which a separate password is available from the university notice boards. Not all of the student’s IT services are available through the HAMKvisitor.

In addition, the dormitories have a wireless network that you can use when you are a resident in the dormitory.

During studies, numerous files are created and processed. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to file placement or organization from the beginning, so that the files can be found when needed and unnecessary files can be deleted. Important files should always be saved to a network drive or cloud service, so that they do not get lost in case of computer failure or loss. Create a file organization model for yourself at the beginning of your studies that you will use throughout your studies.

When can the local hard drive be used?

Do not save important files, such as texts or spreadsheets, to the local hard drive (usually C: and/or D:). The computer’s desktop is also located on the local hard drive. Only save files to the local hard drive that you can find elsewhere or that are not important.

Network drives and their remote access

When logging in to the school’s computer, the following network drives will become available for use:

P: Personal file storage location

U: Students’ shared network drive

When using your own computer, you can find network drives from the MyFiles file service at https://myfiles.hamk.fi, where you log in with your own username. You can save files from your computer to the service and download files from the service to your own computer.

OneDrive storage service

OneDrive for Business is the best file storage location when working on your own computer or when you want to collaborate on a file with another student. OneDrive is also available on school’s computers. Instructions for using OneDrive can be found on this page.

Using OneDrive is easiest with the OneDrive desktop application, which allows OneDrive to appear as a single drive in your computer’s file management. The desktop application is pre-installed on Windows computers and can also be installed with the Office 365 package.

You can find Microsoft 365 instructions here.

You need professional software in some studies. More information about professional software on HAMK’s internal pages (requires login).
