HAMK Campus Moves to Riihimäki City Centre – Matkakeskus Property Acquired

The relocation of Häme University of Applied Sciences’ (HAMK) Riihimäki campus to the city centre is proceeding as planned. HAMK has purchased premises in the Matkakeskus property, specifically the Liikerata section, where the new campus will be established. HAMK is strongly investing in the development of the Riihimäki campus, aiming to provide modern, design-based education environments for a growing number of students.
HAMK has acquired the Liikerata premises in central Riihimäki from LähiTapiola Keskustakiinteistöt Ky. The new campus will be built in this location. The construction schedule and cost estimates will be specified as planning progresses. The modern campus could potentially be in use as early as 2027.
“We are determinedly strengthening the quality and availability of education in Riihimäki, which is home to our second-largest campus. A visible and easily accessible location is a key factor in attracting students,” says HAMK’s president Pertti Puusaari.
The number of students at the Riihimäki campus is steadily increasing. Currently, there are about 1,600 students, with a goal to grow the number to approximately 2,000.
The new campus will feature versatile learning environments that meet the needs of modern education.
“The renewed facilities are being designed to support design-based education, where learning takes place in close collaboration with companies and other employers to enhance regional vitality,” says HAMK’s vice president Heidi Ahokallio-Leppälä.
In Riihimäki, HAMK plays a central role in the Define ecosystem for the defence and security sector, as well as in robotics education – both of which contribute to building future innovations and expertise.
“Our goal is to begin construction of the new campus immediately after the zoning change and building permit are granted, expected in autumn 2026,” estimates HAMK’s Director of Real Estate Development, Tuomas Salonen.
As part of the Liikerata property transaction, the office spaces in the Matkakeskus tower were sold separately by LähiTapiola Keskustakiinteistöt Ky to Riihimäen tilat ja kehitys Oy. These transactions do not have an immediate impact on current tenants.
HAMK’s current premises in Riihimäki are planned to be transferred to the vocational education provider Hyria.
In Hämeenlinna, HAMK is also exploring, in cooperation with the city, the possibility of building a new campus in the city centre. A more central location would increase the campus’s appeal to students, improve access to skilled labour, and support regional vitality in Hämeenlinna.
