HAMK Trains Early Childhood Education Teachers and Promotes Literacy in Rwanda

Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) is participating in the training of teachers and the development of literacy in early childhood education in Rwanda, located in Central Africa. The project, which has received €2 million in funding from the EU, involves organizations from Finland and Lithuania.
HAMK is the only Finnish higher education institution involved in the initiative, which received Twinning funding from the EU, in collaboration with Lithuanian organizations. The two-year project is scheduled to begin in late September.
HAMK’s role is to train teachers and carry out tasks related to the promotion of literacy. A key objective is to improve learning outcomes by expanding access to quality early childhood education and strengthening community and parental support for children’s learning. The project also aims to support the Rwandan Ministry of Education’s capacity to implement early childhood education reforms and to enhance teacher competence and curriculum quality.
“Collaboration with the Ministries of Education in Rwanda and Lithuania offers HAMK a unique opportunity to combine the expertise and experiences of three countries. Our goal is to strengthen the quality, accessibility, and equity of early childhood education so that every child has a strong start on their educational journey,” says Johanna Tervo, Senior Specialist at HAMK.
Twinning is an EU Commission-funded initiative that supports economic and social stability, as well as the development of the rule of law and democracy in EU partner countries.
