AI as a Tool for Lighter Work – Supporting Educators’ Well-Being and Professional Development

Turku University of Applied Sciences, Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK), and the University of Turku are launching a joint project exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can support educators’ work, enhance their well-being, and improve productivity in the education sector.
The project is coordinated by the Turku University of Applied Sciences.
The project will produce recommendations on how educators can use AI to reflect on and develop their pedagogical expertise – for example, through AI-generated personalized feedback. It will also explore how AI can support both individual and team-based teaching as well as contribute to overall well-being at work.
The study will draw on insights from higher education educators and pre-service vocational educators, collected through interviews, participatory observation, and surveys. The goal is to expand understanding of how AI can be responsibly and ethically used in Finnish professional work, especially in the field of education.
Key questions the project seeks to answer include:
- How can AI ease, enrich, and support professional work in education at both individual and community levels?
- What new competencies and requirements are associated with using AI?
- What support and resources do educators need for effective AI integration?
- How can AI support developing pedagogical expertise?
- How can AI promote collegiality and educators’ well-being?
AI presents new opportunities – as well as challenges – for education professionals and their work communities. By addressing growing workloads, large class sizes, diverse student needs, and increasing administrative responsibilities, AI can offer valuable solutions. The project provides new knowledge to inform responsible and sustainable use of AI in the field of education.
