Objective

After completing this course, you will understand the basic chemical concepts essential in construction and the chemical behavior of building materials. You will be able to explain the impact of water, acidity, and chemical processes on the durability and lifespan of structures.
You will recognize typical chemical damage mechanisms and be able to take chemical factors into account in material selection and construction practices.
You will handle construction chemicals safely in accordance with the instructions provided as part of good construction practice.

Content

- Basic concepts and phenomena in chemistry from a construction perspective
- Structure and bonds of substances; why are materials different?
- Chemical behavior of building materials (concrete, metals, wood)
- Water in construction/materials; solutions, solubility
- Acidity, pH
- Key chemical damage mechanisms (carbonation, corrosion)
- Construction chemicals and chemical safety as part of normal construction site activities
