Objective

In this module, you will learn supervisory tasks related to your professional field, focusing on the management of work and people. You will develop your well-being skills by reflecting on yourself as both a supervisor and a subordinate, considering your strengths and areas for development, and enhancing your ability to support your own well-being as well as lead an equitable and thriving work community.

After completing the module, you will understand the diversity of supervisory work and its various causal relationships. You will be aware of your own strengths and development needs as both a supervisor and a subordinate, and you will be able to examine the role of leadership in the workplace from an entrepreneurial perspective. Additionally, you will be able to analyze and apply what you have learned in your roles as a supervisor and a subordinate.

Content

Management philosophy - project management, problem solving and operational development - personality types and their effect on supervisor work - work rules, work safety and work organisation - motivation and rewarding, creating a good work atmosphere and influencing it, leading different organisations, successful communication and problem situations - diversity at work, competence management and development, recruitment and anticipating the future.

Teaching methods

Studying takes place online. The course progresses through sequential assignments, with each student’s individual, journal-style report serving as the main basis for assessment within the module. Weekly studies are supported by the module instructors through voluntary online sessions.

The module includes a mentoring or job shadowing component. For this, you will contact a supervisor working in the professional field who has at least five subordinates. With the help of the supervisor, you will complete this component and gain a work-based perspective on the course content.

Job shadowing/mentoring is carried out in a work community arranged by the student in collaboration with a person in a supervisory role. The implementation must be agreed upon with that person. The host organization can be your own workplace or internship site. Another workplace you have arranged yourself, where you are not currently employed, is also suitable. In mentoring, you discuss the role of a mentor with a person who is currently working as a mentor or has done so previously.

The module coordinator is Tuuli Markkanen
