An Unforgettable RUN-EU Experience – Learning Geopolitics in an International Context

Peng Ren, our student in Computer Applications, participated in RUN European University’s Short Advanced Programme (SAP) focusing on geopolitics in Polytechnical University of Leiria in Portugal. It was not just a learning journey but also an opportunity to engage with diverse perspectives on global political issues. Read about Peng’s unforgettable study experience below!

“This experience had a profound impact on me, both academically and personally. One of the most remarkable aspects of this project was the active participation of everyone involved. Every participant was enthusiastic about discussing political topics, eager to exchange ideas, and highly respectful of different viewpoints. This created an inspiring and open-minded environment where meaningful discussions could take place. The SAP was structured in a way that combined education with hands-on experiences.

The first day started with an ice-breaking activity, allowing us to get to know each other better and build a sense of camaraderie. This was followed by introductory training sessions that laid the foundation for the upcoming activities.

The second day was particularly exciting as we participated in a “Nationality Feast,” where each participant brought traditional food from their home country. This cultural exchange not only allowed us to appreciate different cuisines but also served as a lesson in negotiation and diplomacy at the dining table. Later, Polytechnical University of Leiria organized a guided city tour, offering us insights into the rich history and cultural heritage of Leiria. The evening ended with a fun and competitive quiz contest, showcasing the knowledge and talents of all participants.

Insights into maritime security

On the third day, we had the extraordinary privilege of visiting the Portuguese naval base under the guidance of Professor Susana. This was an exceptional experience, as such visits are usually restricted. The visit provided us with deep insights into maritime security and the role of naval forces in international relations. It also reinforced the importance of the European Union in fostering collaboration and security among nations. This hands-on learning approach was incredibly effective, making a lasting impression on all of us.

The fourth day was dedicated to an extensive project simulation. We recreated a United Nations assembly, where we analyzed and worked to resolve conflicts from different parts of the world. The knowledge and insights we had gained from the previous days significantly helped us understand the complexities of international diplomacy and conflict resolution. The day concluded with a delightful team dinner, where Professor Susana introduced us to authentic Portuguese cuisine. It was a perfect opportunity to bond with fellow participants and reflect on our shared experiences.

Finally, on the last day, we delivered our final presentations, showcasing our learnings and proposed solutions. It was a proud moment for everyone involved, marking the culmination of an intensive and enriching journey. As we bid farewell, we carried with us not just newfound knowledge but also unforgettable memories and friendships that transcended borders.

This experience has left an indelible mark on me and will undoubtedly influence my future endeavors. I am deeply grateful to HAMK, RUN-EU, and Polytechnic University of Leiria for providing me with this incredible experience. This journey has reinforced my belief in the power of education, cross-cultural collaboration, and the importance of engaging with the world beyond the classroom. I will always cherish this unforgettable SAP experience.”
