HAMK involved in developing Early Childhood Education in Rwanda

We are developing the quality and accessibility of Early Childhood Education in Rwanda in cooperation with local stakeholders as well as the Ministries of Education of Rwanda and Lithuania. Our aim is to strengthen pedagogy, teacher education, and the role of parents and local communities in supporting children’s learning.
Rwanda is reforming its Early Childhood Education system to strengthen the quality of provision and to establish coherent structures nationwide. This development work is supported through international cooperation that brings European expertise to Rwanda to support the development. The activities are implemented within the framework of EU Twinning cooperation together with the Ministries of Education of Lithuania and Rwanda.
We contribute pedagogical expertise, know-how in teacher education, and experience in developing community-based approaches. Our experts work in Rwanda through expert missions. During the missions we deliver trainings, workshops, assessments, and development activities in cooperation with local authorities, educators, and other stakeholders.
Development priorities in Rwanda
Our focus is on developing pedagogy in Early Childhood Education and strengthening teacher education. We also wish to strenghten the use of play-based learning approaches in different learning environments. In addition, we support the development of governance and monitoring systems for Early Childhood Education and seek solutions to ensure that high-quality Early Childhood Education and pre-primary education are accessible across the country.
A key element of our work is a community-based approach. We support models in which parents and local communities actively participate in supporting children’s learning and the delivery of Early Childhood Education. The aim is to strengthen the effectiveness and long-term sustainability of Early Childhood Education.
The activities are implemented at national level in Rwanda as part of EU Twinning cooperation. Our work aims to strengthen teachers’ professional competence, and support the development of sustainable structures within Rwanda’s Early Childhood Education system. At the same time, we strengthen HAMK’s international expertise and build long-term partnerships for the development of education systems in Africa.
