Geotechnics 1

Teaching language

  • Finnish
  • EN

Objective

Upon completion of the course, you will be proficient in identifying soil and bedrock based on both appearance and grain composition. You will have a clear understanding of Finland's geological history and understand the impact of groundwater and environmental conditions on construction projects. You will be able to accurately determine technical design parameters for soil types and be able to independently interpret and analyze various ground investigation results. Additionally, you will learn the calculation of bearing capacity for soil-supported foundations and be able to make preliminary estimates of structural settlement.

Content

- You will familiarize yourself with the formation of Finnish soil and learn how soil types are classified.
- The most common ground investigation methods, and you will learn to utilize the observations obtained from them to support design.
- In the calculation section, you will focus on the dimensioning of soil-supported foundations: you will learn to determine bearing capacity and assess the factors affecting settlement.

Learning material

All material used and needed for the course is shared on the course Learn platform. The material includes lecture slides, exercises with solutions, and other relevant digital materials, and you do not need to purchase any compulsory literature separately.
