Objective

After this module, you have the capability to counsel in using garden plants in a changing environment in both gardens and professional cultivation. This module provides you with the capabilities to advise in using garden plants in a changing environment in both gardens and professional cultivation.

After this module, you can identify different species and cultivars of decorative plants and crops, as well as find the correct sources and technologies for their identification. You will understand plant usage from the perspective of sustainable development in both private gardens and commercial cultivation. Additionally, together with the team, you will learn to recognize plant pests, the damage they cause, and the methods for pest control.

Schedule

The module features mandatory workshop dates which all students must be able to attend. The dates are found in the module schedule.
Group assignments are realized across the module so that it is important to join the classroom from the start of the module.

Teaching methods

The course includes teamwork and individual work, with exams on plant identification and theory relevant to the subject, presentations and reporting.

Teaching methods:
- lectures, campus plant tours, workshops.
- A mandatory 1 or 2 day excursion which includes some expenses for students (food, bus fare, potential accommodation)
-Guidance for assignments is organized by the lecturers and teaching assistants according to the available resources

Cooperation with the business sector

This module has not been designed to include direct collaboration with the working life. Connections will be made through the excursion(s) by visiting companies and organizations.

Additional info

The module is directed to horticulture professionals. The contents include studying food plants, ornamental plants and their characteristics and uses in diverse purposes.

Teaching assumes that you as a student have basic knowledge on plant and soil sciences, and also on plant taxonomy and identification. Basic computer skills are required.

A maximum of 5 students can be accepted from the Open University of Applied Sciences- or international exchange studies: Two students from international exchange and three from open university of applied sciences. Please note, that enrolling for open studies requires a Finnish personal identity number.

  • If you are selected as a degree student before you start your open university studies, you may be entitled to a full or partial refund of the tuition fee. In this case, please make your withdrawal as soon as possible by e-mail to studentservices@hamk.fi.
  • HAMK may cancel your studies, for example, due to low enrolment. Other changes (e.g. changes in timetable, teachers or places) are also possible.

When registering for studies, it must be noted that there may be prerequisites for the studies. Open studies for Master’s degrees often require a previously completed Bachelor’s degree. The student must consider whether their own background knowledge and skills correspond to the prerequisites required for completing the course.

Studying in an open university of applied sciences requires having your own computer. Those starting their studies must acquire their own laptop if they do not already have one. For more information, see the rules and instructions of HAMK’s IT services page. Studies often take place online and can be independent of time and classroom space.

A student studying open studies at HAMK (with a credit-based fee) is granted the right to complete the studies for the duration of the specific study. Any completed credits after the end of the study right will not be accepted.
