Product Life Cycle on Display at the Design Students’ Stand at HABITARE Fair

Design students from Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) showcase how design choices shape the environment in their inspiring exhibition of new design at the HABITARE Fair, 10–14 September 2025.
HAMK’s Smart and Sustainable Design degree programme is the only one in Finland offering studies in glass and ceramics design, in addition to footwear and fashion design. The programme attracts students from more than 20 different countries.
At Habitare, the glass and ceramics design students respond to the fair’s theme through their exhibition Touch That Lasts. On display are works by twenty design students whose rugged textures and hand-fitting forms invite visitors to reflect on what makes a product long-lasting. The works have been created using a variety of techniques, such as plaster mold building, wheel throwing, glass slumping and sandblasting.
The exhibition traces the product’s entire life cycle – from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to use and reuse – emphasizing how the designer’s decisions, especially in material selection, can significantly reduce environmental impact. A central highlight is the collection of works made from ceramic waste and discarded glass, showing how the designer’s touch can breathe new life into materials that would otherwise be lost, transforming them into valuable and lasting objects.
