Sustainable Built Environment
Focus areas
Our research emphasises three thematic areas: solutions in biotechnology, sustainable built environment, and future education and competences. Around these we have established trans-disciplinary and cross-professional focus areas where experts from different fields come together.
Humans, technology and the living environment
We enhance people’s capabilities with modern technology so that we can respond to changes in living environments.
Sustainable built environment
We seek solutions that promote the systematic transition of the built environment towards a fossil-free future.
Come and do research with us
Working with us provides you and your organisation with tools for development and change, as well as support for growth. Collaboration can take place at many scales — from large international projects to individual assignments. We also offer services for a variety of needs, such as testing, analysis or prototyping.
Our services
Material microstructure and mechanical properties research
Growing and growing medium experiments
Steel construction research
Our ongoing projects
Adaptive, smart and energy-wise building (ADRA)
Traditional building automation systems contain little intelligent control. In the ADRA project, our aim is to develop solutions that increase the intelligence of buildings and to promote their use and popularization.
Agile expert in additive manufacturing
In Agile-project, we pilot a further training course where business-oriented, agile and innovative product development projects are implemented and technical experts’ knowledge in areas such as metal additive manufacturing is deepened.
CIRC-2-ZERO
The international CIRC-2-ZERO project addresses the challenge of accelerating the reduction of carbon emissions and developing advanced manufacturing capabilities in electronics and engineered wood product SMEs in the Baltic Sea Region. The project will develop and deploy a Digital Twin Demo Platform, which includes practical tools for simulating and optimizing product and value chain design…
Circular Economy Pilots Promoting the Green Transition in the Real Estate and Construction Sector (CIRCULARPILOTS)
CIRCULARPILOTS supports SMEs in the real estate and construction sector in their transition to a circular economy.
Climate-resilient Suburban Areas (ILPI)
The reduction in plot sizes, maximization of floor area, and the increase in driveways and parking spaces have significantly decreased vegetation. The Climate-Resilient Suburban Areas (ILPI) project aims to identify threshold values for densification that allow suburban vegetation cover to be preserved.
DataMill – sustainable data management for companies at smart city environment
DataMill optimises the utilisation of timely and historical data for cities and businesses, enhancing service delivery and decision-making processes.
Digital autonomous services in circular economy
Together with our partners, we are developing the services of the circular economy area of the MORE industrial park in Hämeenlinna.
