Building a future through Nursing

We interviewed Ranjan Dhital, a second-year Nursing student at HAMK. Ranjan enjoys the mix of theory and practice in his studies and is happy to help others through his roles as a class representative and tutor.
Why did you want to study Nursing?
My background is in medicine. I completed a Diploma in General Medicine in my home country, Nepal, and worked for about four years in different health organizations. Through that experience, I realized how much I enjoy being directly involved in patient care.
Nursing felt like the best way to continue growing my skills and make a real impact in people’s lives.
Why did you choose Finland?
I chose Finland because of the high-quality education and the strong, well-organized healthcare system. I also appreciate the safe environment and the supportive, equal working culture. I felt that studying here would give me great professional opportunities and a good place to build my future.
How have the studies been so far? What has been the best?
The studies have been going well. I like the balance between theory and practice, and the simulation labs are my favourite. They help me build confidence and connect what I already knew from my experience with the new skills I’m learning here.
What has studying Finnish been like? What tips would you give to beginners?
Learning Finnish hasn’t been easy, but it’s been rewarding. I try to use it in small ways every day.
My tips:
- Start simple and practice regularly
- Be patient with your progress
- Listen to Finnish as much as possible
- Don’t worry about mistakes – just speak
You are also a class representative and a tutor. Can you tell more about those roles?
I enjoy helping others, and my previous work taught me the value of communication and teamwork. That’s why I wanted to take these roles.
As a class representative, I communicate feedback between students and teachers and help support the class. As a tutor, I guide new students, help them adjust, and make sure they feel comfortable in the beginning.
Where would you like to work in the future?
In the future, I’d like to work in a clinical environment where I can use both my nursing studies and my earlier medical experience. I’m especially interested in hospital work, emergency care, or primary healthcare. I want to continue learning and build a strong career in the healthcare field.
