About me
Merja Saarela (PhD) is a Principal Research Scientist at Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK Tech) and has led the Multisensory and Assistive Technology (MATEC) research group since 2014. The ecosystem-based RDI model developed within MATEC was awarded in 2015 and is founded on close collaboration with companies, the public and third sectors, and students in real-life development environments.
Saarela’s research and development work is built around two mutually reinforcing themes. The first focuses on supporting equitable learning and participation through technology-assisted solutions. She has been among the early pioneers in advancing digital accessibility in higher education and Universal Design for Learning, which have become core pillars of her research, teaching, and pedagogical development work. This area is strongly supported by her educational background in special education.
The second key research theme relates to accessible and universally designed mobility and transport environments. Saarela studies and develops digital, accessible, and technology-assisted solutions that support functioning in the built environment and improve the accessibility of mobility environments as part of everyday travel chains.
Saarela works as an expert and developer within HAMK as well as at local, regional, and national levels, supporting organisations and communities in questions related to accessibility, inclusion, and universal design through research, education, and co-creation.
