Saija Karevaara
Senior Lecturer
Languages and Communications
About me
A long-time educator in universities of applied sciences, and my work has always circled around the same three forces: encounter, words, and action.
Since 2016 I have served as a Senior Lecturer in Communication in the Bachelor of Social Services programme. From 2003 to 2015, as a Lecturer in Cultural Studies in HAMK’s Crafts and Recreation programme, 2000-2002 as a communication and interaction skills teacher travelling between different HAMK campuses.
My professional roots run deep in the practices of dialogue. I work with various interaction methods — from Erätauko dialogues to Nonviolent communication. Alongside this, I support students in academic writing and the writing process. My area is also promoting cultural wellbeing (literary art, creative writing, and drama education).
I hold a Master of Arts degree from the University of Tampere and I am qualified to teach Finnish language and literature. Before stepping to HAMK, I taught in comprehensive school, upper secondary school, and vocational education, which has given a picture of where students come from.
Over the years I have also trained as a bibliotherapy facilitator and completed studies in creative writing and drama education. Professional life began as an HSO secretary, now equivalent to a Bachelor of Business Administration.
My core has remained the same: helping people find their voice, connect with each other, and act with intention and creativity.
