HAMK’s Riihimäki Campus Move to the Travel Centre Progresses – New Campus Supports Growth Goals for HAMK and the City of Riihimäki

Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) is moving its Riihimäki campus next to the railway station, integrated with the Travel Centre. The new campus will have an impact on HAMK’s operations and the overall development of the station area in Riihimäki.

In summer 2025, HAMK purchased the Liikerata premises at the Travel Centre, where versatile and modern learning environments will be built. A local plan amendment is currently in progress and is expected to become legally valid in autumn 2026.

“Our current plan is to use 2026 for designing the new facilities and preparing for construction, with the actual implementation phase taking place in 2027. The new premises are expected to be ready for use in early 2028,” estimates Tuomas Salonen, HAMK’s Director of Property Development.

The campus design will emphasise comfort, community spirit and modern learning environments that support both growing student numbers and research, development and innovation activities. The campus will host studies in mechanical engineering, transport, information and communication technology, and future transport systems. HAMK aims to increase the number of students in Riihimäki to 2,000. In addition, the campus houses the HAMK Tech research unit.

New location brings accessibility and synergy

The new campus will be located right next to the railway station, making it easily accessible by train, bus and on foot or by bike. The location enables closer cooperation with local businesses and other stakeholders and supports Riihimäki’s strategic goals for developing the station area.

Moving the campus to the Travel Centre will bring students and higher education activity into the heart of the city, revitalising the station area and supporting broader development. At the same time, HAMK’s current premises will be transferred to Hyriä’s use.

Shared goals of the city and HAMK

Jouni Eho

The City of Riihimäki is supporting the campus project with €7.5 million. Mayor Jouni Eho highlights HAMK’s importance to the city and the development of the Travel Centre area:

“Häme University of Applied Sciences plays a crucial role in Riihimäki. HAMK is one of our strategic partners, and with the new campus project, its significance and role in the city will grow even further. When HAMK brings two thousand engineering students to the station area, it will also positively influence other development projects, such as Voimala and Railway Depots (Veturitallit).”

Both HAMK and the City of Riihimäki benefit from investments in growth and development.

“We already see HAMK’s impact on the city’s attractiveness – new international engineering programmes have increased interest, and in the future, HAMK’s growth will boost the entire city. We genuinely want to be a higher education city, and HAMK’s growth means Riihimäki will grow,” Eho says.
