Language Café Brings Locals and Internationals Together for the Third Year

The Language Café, now in its third year since launching in spring 2023, has once again opened its doors to everyone interested in languages, cultures, and new connections. Organized weekly, the event offers a relaxed and welcoming environment where locals and internationals meet to speak and learn Finnish—not in a classroom setting, but through genuine conversation and personal connection.
At the Language Café, participants of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Whether you are a newcomer to Finland, a long-term resident, or a native Finnish speaker, you’ll find a place to share experiences, tips, and stories. The event is designed to help internationals practice Finnish in a supportive way, while also giving locals the chance to meet people from around the world and discover new cultures and languages.
Unlike a traditional language lesson, the Language Café focuses on building real connections. Many participants are surprised to find common ground—shared hobbies, family situations, or life experiences—regardless of where they come from. Local Finnish speakers are especially encouraged to join, as their insights into language and culture are invaluable for newcomers.
The Language Café is held every Thursday from 16:30 to 17:30 in Hämeenlinna, with the location alternating weekly between the Main Library and the University Center.
“The atmosphere at the Language Café is always warm and open. It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to help others learn Finnish – and at the same time, I learn something new about different languages and cultures every time. Each meeting is a little journey around the world!” says Katariina From, Career guide and Alumni activities coordinator from HAMK International.
