Basic field information

Area: 10.27 hectares
Soil type: rich clay loam (rmHeS)

The field has light soil on the edges, such as loam, where sugar beets have been grown before. The central part of the block is more challenging clay soil, which significantly delays sowing when cultivated as a whole. Once every ten years, the timing of cultivation is spot on. Nowadays, it is used as a pasture block, with renewal done in strips.

The field where the renewal of grass takes place in strips. In 2023, strip 5 has been renewed.
Blocks 1-3. Timothy + meadow fescue + English ryegrass + smooth meadow grass + tall fescue + white clover + alsike clover + red clover + herbs total 2 kg/ha (bird’s-foot trefoil, ribwort plantain, chicory, caraway) + rye as a cover crop.
Block 4. Naturcom Grazing pasture mix, 30 kg/ha + rye as a cover crop.
Block 5. Spring triticale 120 kg/ha, green pea 50 kg/ha, Naturcom Grazing pasture mix 30 kg/ha.

Research and experiments

During the 2019 growing season, rotational grazing for dairy cows was tested on the field. Read more from the data sheet here.

17.5.2018 In autumn, the block was left with straw due to wet conditions. The straw was not collected until spring, and it disturbed the growth of the grass. The aerial photo shows clearly that the straw disturbed the growth. The transverse stripes have come from a patch sown with weed harrow.
May 24, 2018 Nurmi has started a good growth. The first grazers for section C will be obtained on Monday, May 28, 2018.
28.5.2018 The dairy cows were allowed to graze in block D.
8.6.2018 There would be plenty of grazing land. Due to the dryness, building a pasture is a challenge, as the ground is so hard that small fibreglass sticks are unlikely to get into the ground.
