Block 12: Yhteislaidun

The block information contains basic information about the block and events during the growing season, observations, and yield data.

Block 12
Yhteislaidun

Block basic information

Area: 14.56 hectares (A 7.53ha + B 7.03ha)
Soil type: rich loamy clay (rmHeS), fertile sandy moraine (mHtMr)

The plot has only been part of Mustiala’s cultivation relatively late, in the 1960s. Previously, it was common pastureland. The plot has been divided into two growth plots. The plot has a difficult shape, with shady forest edge areas. On the side facing the barn, there is a collecting ditch, which is visible as a depression during wetter times. The edge of the ditch is clayey, but the soil becomes noticeably lighter and turns into sandy loam and loamy sand towards plot B.

This block has been combined with the old blocks 13 (Yhteslaidun) and 14 (Antin veräjä). At the back of the block was a part that was shaded by the forest and had long suffered from moisture problems. This part has now been re-drained and is functioning well. When digging in the ditches at the back, blue clay was found. This is traditional oat land, meaning it is moist and shady.

Block 12 A
At block 12, the fifth harvest of bluegrass pasture will be fixed in the summer of 2016. There is not much bluegrass left in the pasture, and the reason may be the compaction of the soil over the years. Pictures from the 2016 growing season:

Analysis of finished silage (Valma):

From the raw material analysis, it can be seen that the first harvest has brought along straw from the previous year’s protective crop, which increases the dry matter content and lowers the D-value.
