New degree programme responds to the growing demand in defence industry

Häme University of Applied Sciences launches a new degree programme focusing on overall safety. It is aimed specifically at engineers who want to develop defence-related skills. The degree programme is designed in cooperation with security and defence experts.
Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) is launching a Master’s degree programme called “Technological Solutions for Comprehensive Security”. The degree programme will focus on AI solutions, technology foresight and dual-use technologies that serve both civil and defence purposes. The degree programme will start in autumn 2026.
In a volatile international environment, the importance of overall security is highlighted, opening up new business opportunities in the field of technology.
“The defense and security of supply industries have a particular demand for specific competencies. The objective of this new degree programme is to address the identified skills deficit,” says Lassi Martikainen, Dean of the School of Business, Design and Technology at HAMK.
The studies are mainly online, which allows one to study while working. The education will be delivered in Riihimäki, thus serving the international DEFINE network in the defence and security sector. DEFINE is building a network of cooperation in the field across Finland, with cities, companies, universities and authorities working together. The degree programme will be delivered using the opportunities offered by the DEFINE network.
According to Martikainen, the new YAMK programme stands out from other total security programmes because of its technology focus and business perspective.
“The security and defence cluster in Riihimäki provides excellent opportunities for graduates to set up businesses in the field. The opportunities for networking and cooperation during studies are therefore even exceptional,” says Martikainen.
