Our objective is to increase the use of bio-based materials and biological processes in industrial water treatment to enable efficient side stream recycling, utilization and/or upgrading into value-added products. The aim is to develop sustainable, integrated concepts for the purification and reuse of industrial process water and aqueous side streams.
Large volumes of various aqueous side streams and wastewaters containing valuable compounds, such as fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, are generated in food industry. Recovering and utilizing these components would be a more sustainable option than directing them to conventional wastewater treatment process.
The project focuses on developing bio-based water treatment solutions and combining them with other innovative technologies. We bring together companies interested in developing new products and processes for water treatment, as well as improving the profitability and sustainability of the food industry.
At HAMK, we contribute to the characterization of the aqueous industrial side streams and the development of the overall treatment concept. In addition, we develop biological processes for water treatment and nutrient recovery by utilizing microalgae and fungal mycelia as well as anaerobic treatment.
Target group
Food industry companies, water treatment technology providers, and companies involved in the production and development of bio-based materials.
