We strengthen the energy security and security of supply of SMEs and municipalities in the Kanta‑Häme region while supporting carbon‑neutral growth. We produce up‑to‑date information and develops practical tools to improve energy supply reliability, energy flexibility and preparedness for disruptions.
In recent years, risks affecting energy systems have increased. Strong fluctuations in energy prices, geopolitical tensions, threats of supply interruptions, and tightening climate targets pose challenges especially for SMEs and municipalities whose operations depend on reliable and affordable energy. At the same time, the transition towards a carbon‑neutral energy system requires new solutions, competencies, and the ability to examine energy issues also from the perspectives of security and resilience.
The Energy Security and Carbon‑Neutral Growth in Kanta‑Häme (EnergiaTurva) project responds to these challenges by strengthening regional energy security, energy resilience and security of energy supply in Kanta‑Häme. Our goal is to support the region’s carbon‑neutrality targets and ensure the availability and reliability of energy by developing energy security in a comprehensive manner across regional energy procurement and energy systems. The project focuses, for example, on energy availability and supply reliability, diversifying energy sources and improving economic stability by increasing energy flexibility, such as storage capacity, as well as on system robustness and preparedness for disruptions.
The project produces up‑to‑date information for regional stakeholders and, in cooperation with stakeholders, develops a practical set of criteria for assessing energy security as well as assessment models that help companies and municipalities better prepare for disturbances in energy systems and future changes. In addition, the project simulates and examines the benefits of energy storage for energy systems and for individual SMEs as energy consumers.
Energy security, security of energy supply and energy resilience are key prerequisites for business operations, municipal services and the overall resilience of society. The project supports companies and municipalities in understanding the current state of energy security and preparedness and in identifying the most significant risks in their operating environment. By participating, stakeholders can influence the development of tools and operating models so that they respond to real needs and are usable in practice.
The project is implemented by the Sustainable Energy Systems research group.
Target group
The target groups of the project are SMEs operating in the Kanta‑Häme region, particularly companies in industry, logistics and the energy sector, as well as cities and municipalities in Kanta‑Häme. In addition, the project cooperates with authorities, actors involved in security of supply, development organizations and the education sector.
Operating area
The project operates in the Kanta‑Häme region.
Project goals and results
PROJECT GOALS
The main objective of EnergiaTurva is to promote the carbon‑neutrality targets of Kanta‑Häme and the security of energy availability by developing the overall energy security, energy resilience and security of energy supply in regional energy systems.
- To create an overall picture of the current state of energy security, energy resilience and security of supply of SMEs and municipalities in Kanta‑Häme.
- To jointly develop with companies and municipalities a set of energy security criteria and priorities to support decision‑making.
- To examine the role of energy flexibility and energy storage in improving energy efficiency, operational reliability and carbon neutrality.
- To produce concrete assessment models and action proposals to strengthen energy security and security of supply.
EXPECTED RESULTS
- An analysis of regional energy production methods, energy infrastructure and energy supply chains.
- A current‑state analysis of energy security, energy resilience and security of energy supply.
- A regional indicator framework for energy security criteria developed through stakeholder cooperation, as well as an identification of business opportunities related to energy resilience and security.
- A study, based on simulations, on the impact of energy storage on improving energy efficiency, achieving carbon‑neutrality targets and thereby increasing the level of energy security.
- Assessment models for SMEs, municipal actors and the region as a whole to improve energy security, energy resilience and security of energy supply in Kanta‑Häme.
- Policy and action recommendations to strengthen energy security in the Kanta‑Häme region.
