Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions, recommendations for a suitable computer for studying, and instructions for using your own device during your studies. The page also contains contact information for IT services so that you can get help quickly when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Before sending a ticket or making a call, check if you can find the answer here.

Log in at id.hamk.fi and authenticate strongly (with bank credentials). Choose your username and press continue. Select your MFA number and enter your new phone number.

More instructions

Try logging in again at learn.hamk.fi and select HAMK-login.

Have you enrolled for the course? Has your registration been accepted? Has the course already started?

  • HAMK student: if you answered yes to all, and the course is not visible, please create a ticket.
  • Cross-institutional student: if you answered yes to all, make sure you logged in with your HAMK account, your browser may try to log you in with another university’s credentials. Solution: use a different browser or incognito/inprivate browser window for cross-institutional studies. If the problem is not solved by checking the login, please create a ticket where you describe in as much detail as possible the actions already taken and the course that is not visible.

First, make sure that you are logged in or trying to log in with your HAMK credentials, not with credentials from another institution. If you are using other Microsoft credentials on the same computer, we recommend creating a separate profile in your browser for your school credentials.

You can access the browser’s own instructions on how to create your own profile from the links below:

You can also use the browser in private browsing mode (e.g. Incognito, inPrivate), in which case logins will not be saved in the computer’s memory. You can open the Incognito window from the browser’s menu in the top right corner by clicking on the three dots.

Log in at id.hamk.fi and authenticate with your bank credentials or with weak authentication. From the service, you can find out your username and change your password if needed.

First, try logging out and in again. Also, make sure you are logged in with your HAMK username. If this doesn’t help, create a ticket and explain what you have already done.

Ask your course teacher first about software installation and student licenses.

On campuses, it’s recommended to use wireless eduroam network. Log in to the network with your HAMK username (username@student.hamk.fi) and password. More instructions for using eduroam.

We recommend using the Learn-Moodle environment through your phone’s browser. The app may not work properly.

  • The right to use HAMK’s IT services is tied to your right to study.
  • When you graduate or your right to study ends, HAMK will close your user account and permanently delete your email inbox and other files after a certain period of time.
    • Notify your contacts of the change in your email address.
    • Copy your own files from HAMK servers, which you want to keep, and delete the rest.
    • Copy your own files and materials from HAMK’s M365 service that you want to keep, and delete the rest.
    • Copy your own email messages or forward them to another email address.
    • Uninstall any software received via HAMK from your computer that you no longer have the right to use.

Computer requirements and using your own computer in studying

All students must have their own laptop (BYOD, Bring Your Own Device).

  • The recommended operating system for a computer is Windows 11.
  • Take into account the recommendations when purchasing a computer (basic level or power level).
  • Please note that your computer has sufficient battery life, as not all classrooms have enough power sockets.
  • Students are responsible for their own computer settings, applications, and security.
  • Make sure that your computer has an HDMI port (type A) or get a suitable HDMI adapter (type A) for your computer.
  • If you plan to use your employer’s computer for studying, you need to have administrator rights on the computer in order to install the programs used for studying.
  • Some programs require a paid license (such as Adobe programs, certain CAD programs). These can be used in HAMK’s computer classrooms with HAMK licenses if needed. More detailed information about licenses and software can be found on this page: BYOD Professional Programs (requires login).
  • The professional programs used at HAMK are Windows programs.
  • The recommended operating system for a computer is Windows 11 (64-bit). Windows 11 S is not suitable.

The use of Chromebooks, Linux, and MacOS computers in studies

Studying is also possible with these operating systems. However, HAMK’s IT instructions are specifically designed for Windows, and most professional applications only work in a Windows environment. See below for more information.

Chromebook: Chromebook is not supported for studying. Desktop applications and certain exam functions do not work on Chromebook. For example, writing a thesis is not easily achievable on Chromebook.

Linux: Some software is not compatible with Linux. Virtualization software is needed to use Windows-based professional applications.

MacOS: Some software is not compatible with MacOS. Virtualization software is needed to use Windows-based professional applications.

Using MacOS for studies (click on the arrow for more information)

Install the following basic programs on your MacOS computer:

Most of the professional software is not compatible with MacOS computers. To use them, virtualization software is needed, such as Parallels (paid) or VMware Fusion Pro (free). Virtualization software is resource intensive, so we recommend at least 16 GB of memory and an M2 series processor for MacOS computers.

You can download the Parallels software from https://www.parallels.com/landingpage/pd/education/. You can get the student discount by using your HAMK email.
