HAMK is launching a new master’s degree programme in pedagogical leadership

The new degree programme is designed in response to the current leadership needs in the field of vocational education and training.

In autumn 2027, the School of Professional Teacher Education of Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) will launch a new master’s degree programme in pedagogical leadership. It is intended for persons working in leadership and managerial positions in vocational education and training institutions. The degree programme will provide an opportunity to deepen pedagogical leadership competence and to respond to the constantly changing challenges in the education sector. The programme will also be open to other professionals engaged in pedagogical leadership issues in their work, such as professionals in liberal adult education.

Proactive leadership is required

Vocational education and training institutions operate in an environment where digitalisation, changes in funding models, and the rapid pace of transformation in the world of work require skilled and proactive leadership.

“The aim of the new master’s degree is to strengthen leadership competence, particularly in the context of vocational education and training – with a focus on comprehensive understanding of pedagogical leadership, systemic thinking, educational quality, organisational renewal capability, and leading people. The programme supports the professional growth and development of pedagogical leaders,” explains Johanna Ärling, Head of Degree Programme at HAMK.

Combining research knowledge and practical pedagogical development will support the participants’ ability to utilise the latest research-based knowledge in their own organisation and to understand systemic impacts of leadership in the educational community.

Diverse content and flexible implementation

The new master’s degree programme will be built in a close dialogue with the providers of vocational education and training so that its content will meet the current leadership competence needs. The studies will be implemented in blended format, which is suitable for professionals who are currently employed.

“The degree programme will provide concrete tools for pedagogical development and support the strengthening of leadership. This is a major investment in enhancing the quality and advancing the capacity for renewal of vocational education and training,” Johanna Ärling concludes.
