From International Business Studies Towards a Societal Career
Yovini moved to Valkeakoski with her family three and a half years ago to study in Finland. Her Bachelor of Business studies served as a springboard to a Master’s programme in Security Management and Politics.
For Yovini, who had previously visited Europe, Finland didn’t feel very foreign, although everything was new. She first began to familiarise with student life at HAMK. Fortunately, finding new friends was easy:
–There were students from several different nationalities in the same group as me. By the end of the first year we were all friends.
In the first year we began building a foundation in business studies and learned to study and work in groups. Yovini already had prior experience in economics and accounting, but gained further knowledge at HAMK. Sustainable development was a new study subject. The term itself was not new, but studying the topic was.
During her studies, Yovini went on a study trip to Brussels, which was a unique opportunity to see the European Union’s work in practice.
Work Experience in HAMK
Before studying at HAMK, Yovini had no work experience. However, she gained some experience alongside her studies. During her studies, Yovini worked at various campuses as a tutor, a student assistant, a marketing assistant and a marketing trainee.
-This was an excellent start to my career and I gained a great deal of valuable work experience.
Thesis on Sustainability Reporting
The topic for the thesis was found in the second year during the Management Accounting course. The lecturer spoke about sustainability reporting, and after discussing it with her groupmates Yovini decided it would be great to learn more about the subject and ultimately write her thesis on it.
At the end of the second year Yovini found a commissioner for the thesis with the help of a lectuter. She describes the thesis process as an important experience:
–I got familiarised with working with companies and with how matters are handled in practical working life.
International Business Opened Doors to Dreams
Yovini celebrated her graduation in mid-June and her Master’s studies at the University of Tampere begin in August. In the topic of Security Management and Politics, she is motivated by the subject’s topicality and relevance, as well as the interesting employment opportunities in an international context.
–Having lived in Finland and studied at HAMK, it was easy to apply to university. I am excited about the future and intend to pursue a PhD.
