HAMK’s Research Action Plan Published

The new action plan guides the development of applied research at Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK). Its key aim is to renew society through interdisciplinary and cross-professional research.

HAMK’s applied research is built on supporting the success of business and industry in Kanta-Häme, creating societal change through new services, products and innovations, and strengthening the resilience of communities and organisations while supporting comprehensive security.

The Research Action Plan explains the goals that guide the development of our research, development and innovation (RDI) activities. These goals have been designed to be practical and measurable, and they are set for the short term, approximately 1–5 years ahead.

“We want our research to genuinely drive transformation in businesses, industry, and the region by identifying practical solutions to recognised challenges. Achieving this requires bringing together experts from different fields and sectors, including educational institutions, companies and society.”

Eight Research Focus Areas

Our research is centred on eight transdisciplinary and cross-professional focus areas, where professionals, researchers and research groups from different fields work to solve global challenges and promote business and industry in our region. The focus areas can be grouped into three thematic entities: solutions in biotechnology, sustainable built environment, and future education and skills.

“We want our research to genuinely drive transformation in businesses, industry, and the region by identifying practical solutions to recognised challenges. Achieving this requires bringing together experts from different fields and sectors, including educational institutions, companies, and society”, says Annukka Pakarinen, Director of Research and Innovation.

Each focus area has its own mission and objectives. In practice, the work takes place, for example, through projects, of which HAMK has around 150 ongoing each year. The project portfolio is worth nearly EUR 17 million. The nature of the work is solution-oriented.

The action plan also identifies international networks as a key success factor. One of the most strategically significant of these for HAMK is RUN-European University (RUN-EU). The alliance of ten European higher education institutions opens up new opportunities to develop research cooperation with higher education institutions, companies and regions across Europe.
