We will examine how assessing emotional development can help identify students’ support needs more accurately and guide timely pedagogical and rehabilitative support measures. The goal is to strengthen the self-rehabilitation, inclusion, and opportunities for students who require intensive special support to progress in their studies in accordance with their own strengths.

The Edu Research Unit at Häme University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Valter Center for Learning Support, is investigating whether the SEO-R2 emotional development assessment tool is suitable for evaluating the stage of emotional development among young people enrolled in TELMA education.

With a better understanding of the stage of emotional development, instruction and support can be planned in an even more individualized manner according to the student’s needs. This helps strengthen self-regulation skills, supports coping with daily life, and promotes the student’s holistic growth, well-being, and self-rehabilitation. At the same time, it enables the development of more appropriate pedagogical and rehabilitative approaches that support the student’s journey toward the workforce, the greatest possible independence, and participation in society.

Target group

The target group and primary beneficiaries are first-year TELMA students who, during the transition phase, exhibit behavior that deviates from what is typical for their age and developmental level, and for whom previously targeted support measures have not been sufficient to reduce such behavior.

The secondary target group consists of the teaching and guidance staff of the AMEO network, as well as student welfare and rehabilitation staff, who play a key role in the multidisciplinary implementation and development of rehabilitative pedagogy.

Operating area

The results will be available for use nationwide.

Goals

  • The primary goal is to strengthen the overall well-being and rehabilitation of TELMA students by providing teaching staff with new approaches and by increasing general understanding of students’ functional capacity and the stage of emotional development underlying it.
  • We will investigate the views of professionals at partner institutions regarding the usability and acceptability of the assessment scale, as well as the observable effects of the support measures derived from the assessment summary on the functional capacity of the students in question.
  • To the extent possible, we will also investigate the students’ own experiences regarding the benefits of the support measures derived from the assessment method.
