HAMK’s new Smart & Bio -building on schedule

Construction of the new Smart & Bio education and research environment is on schedule for completion in mid-November. Facilities will be built for bio and food technology education and the growing food research community, including facilities for food processing, fermentation product development or fermentation of plant-based products.

The 1800-square-metre Häme University of Applied Sciences Smart & Bio building will house teaching facilities and modern laboratories and research facilities for the multidisciplinary development of smart solutions and applications to promote the green transition.

Work is currently underway on the interior painting, acoustic installations in the lower ceiling and ventilation and plumbing installations.

The street level of the building will mainly be used for research, while the upper floor will be used for education. The building will house HAMK’s degree programme in Biotechnology and Food Engineering from the current Hämeenlinna University of Applied Sciences Building B, as well as the activities of the SmartBio key ecosystem. In particular, research related to bioprocesses will be provided with new facilities and special attention will be paid to the use of process data.

Facilities will be built for Biotechnology and Food Engineering degree programme and the growing food research community, for example to enable food processing, the development of fermentation products or the fermentation of plant-based products. On the research side, the new facilities are a clear step forward for HAMK, as more functional, technologically advanced and safer facilities will enable research in areas such as synthetic biology.

Particular attention has been paid to ventilation. The third floor of the building is equipped completely with a ventilation system.

“Ventilation must be first class in areas where different chemicals are handled. We also want to make the facilities flexible so that we can continue to develop our operations in new directions,” says Tiina Koskinen, Laboratory Manager.

HAMK Bio’s research groups and teaching staff will work in the building. The largest teaching laboratory can accommodate about 30 students at a time. Smart & Bio will again take HAMK’s research to a new, international level and help companies to develop their operations and find new commercial solutions.

MVR-Yhtymä Oy is the construction contractor for the project, Tammelan Talotekniikka Oy is the plumbing and ventilation contractor and ESP Lahti Oy is the electrical contractor. The total value of these contracts is EUR 6.2 million.
