Unlocking the full potential of logistics companies’ data with artificial intelligence

Logistics companies constantly generate valuable data on shipments, vehicles, and operational efficiency, but they often fail to make full use of it. In the recently launched LAITOS project, we are helping logistics SMEs in the Kanta-Häme region make more effective use of their data through analytics and artificial intelligence.
Our goal is to streamline transportation, improve fleet utilization, and strengthen companies’ competitiveness, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. We analyze the transportation and vehicle data of participating companies and, based on this, develop concrete tools that enable companies to better leverage the potential related to, for example, transportation optimization, route planning, or improving fleet utilization.
At the same time, we are building a common data model for the logistics sector that facilitates the integration of different systems and the utilization of data. In practice this means, for example, clear recommendations on what data to collect, in what format, and how the data should be managed so that it can be genuinely utilized in operational planning and to support corporate decision-making.
Companies gain access to practical tools and support for:
- Optimizing transportation and routes
- Predicting fleet maintenance needs
- Reducing fuel consumption
- Identifying operational bottlenecks
We use transportation, route, and load data, as well as data collected from vehicles, to train our AI models. We develop models that allow us to identify the most cost- and fuel-efficient routes and reduce empty mileage. By automatically identifying anomalies in the data, we can anticipate fleet maintenance needs and prevent unexpected breakdowns.
We develop AI models that analyze data combined from various sources to provide a comprehensive overview of how routes, cargo, and driving style affect fuel consumption and operational efficiency. We aim to build solutions that companies can utilize even without significant in-house development resources.
Development driven by business needs
“We generate a lot of data, but we often fall short when it comes to putting that information to use. We hope that AI solutions will support both our day-to-day operations and our business planning. Tools for more automated analysis of data from various sources would be of concrete benefit to us,” says Kari Venäläinen, an entrepreneur from Karimo Oy participating in the project.
We offer practical support specifically to logistics SMEs in the Kanta-Häme region, but the tools and solutions being developed will also be released more widely for use by transport industry operators.
Our project, co-funded by the European Union, is running 1.2.2026 – 31.12.2027. We are now seeking to recruit additional logistics SMEs of various sizes to join the project – companies that are eager to develop their operations and decision-making processes in a smart way.
