Student selection criteria

Students are selected using three selection methods:

  • admission on the basis of the International UAS Exam entrance examination
  • admission on certificate-based selection based on matriculation examination
  • admission on the basis of SAT-test results

Entrance examination: International UAS Exam

International UAS Exam is a joint digital entrance exam of Finnish universities of applied sciences, used for selecting students to study programmes leading to a degree and conducted in English.

The entrance exam consists of two phases organized remotely online:

  1. First phase: written examination

The exam is organized on 9.2.2022 at 12:00 (UTC/GMT +3).

  1. Second phase: group interview

Group interviews are organised between 2.–16.3.2022. All eligible applicants who have passed the written exam will be invited to the group interview.

The final student selection is made on the basis the written exam (60%) and the group interview (40%).

In the entrance examination, the applicants’ readiness for UAS studies are assessed. The entrance exam does not include any advance reading materials or pre-assignments.

Exam participants from outside of Finland can check the Finnish time e.g. with the Time and Date website: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/finland/helsinki

 First phase – written exam

The entrance examination is organized on 9.2.2022 at 12:00 (UTC/GMT +3). The exam is organized once at that time and cannot be completed at another time.

All applicants will be invited to the first phase. Approximately one week before the entrance exam, you receive a personal link in the email address you have given in your Studyinfo application. The link is also available at My Studyinfo in your own application.

The first phase of the entrance exam is a written examination conducted individually on the applicant’s computer remotely online.

The entrance examination is conducted in the English language. The contents and duration of the exam are determined on the basis of the study programmes you apply for. You complete at one time all the exam sections that apply to the study programmes you apply for. The entrance exam includes both common exam sections to all applicants and field-specific exam sections.

Common tasks for all study fields:

  • Reasoning skills
  • English language

In addition to common sections of all study fields, the entrance examination contains the following study field specific sections:

  • Mathematical skills (fields of Technology, Business Administration and ICT, Natural Resources)
  • Advanced mathematical skills (fields of Technology)

In the Mathematical and scientific skills section the applicant may use a function calculator of the entrance examination system. Each section has a minimum accepted score that the applicant has to achieve in order to have the written exam approved.

More detailed instructions and information on the date, duration and scoring of the written exam can be found at www.uasinfo.fi.

Second phase – group interview (oral exam)

All eligible applicants who have passed the written exam will be invited to the second phase. Group interviews are organised between 2.–16.3.2022. The second phase is common to all study fields and the applicant participates in only one group interview. In the group interview, the focus is on the applicants’ oral English language skills.

The maximum score of group interview is 40 and the lowest passing score is 8. More detailed instructions and information on the date, duration and scoring of the written exam can be found at www.uasinfo.fi.

Pre-reading materials

There is no pre-reading material.

Entrance exam cooperation

Häme UAS participates in national entrance examination cooperation.

Universities of applied sciences in Finland organize International UAS exam in cooperation. Degree programmes belonging to the same entrance exam group accept entrance exams completed in other participating UAS.

NB: Häme UAS will not organize campus entrance examinations in the joint application 2022.

Individual arrangements for entrance examinations

Fill in the Application for individual arrangements in the International UAS Exam (opens 5 January 2022), with the necessary attachments, by 26 January 2022 at 15:00 (UTC/GMT+2). Your application for individual arrangements is processed in Häme University of Applied Sciences if you have applied for a degree programme that uses the International UAS Exam entrance examination and HAMK is first on your application form. HAMK will inform you by email on individual arrangements that you have been granted. If the decision is negative, reasons for rejection will be provided with the decision.

Requests for individual arrangements sent after the deadline are processed only in acute, exceptional cases. Individual arrangements cannot be granted if the request is submitted too late, with regard to the timetable of the entrance examination, or individual arrangements are otherwise deemed impossible to arrange. If the need for individual arrangements emerge after the end of the application period, submit the application for individual arrangements and contact by email HAMK Admission Services [admissions(at)hamk.fi] as soon as possible.

Required enclosures

Please enclose to your electronic form copies of certificates that support your request (e.g. medical certificate or equivalent statement on the nature of your disease or disability, or certificate on dyslexia or learning difficulty). Those who request support measures, such as additional time, on the grounds of dyslexia have to attach a statement of a trained special needs teacher, an expert psychologist, speech therapist or specialist medical doctor (e.g. child neurologist, neurologist or phoniatrician). The statement shall indicate that you need support measures for taking the exam due to dyslexia. The UAS may accept an equivalent decision made by The Finnish Matriculation Examination Board if it contains the granted support measures.

The validity of statements is assessed on a case-by-case basis depending on the persistence of disability, disease or learning difficulty. For dyslexia, only statements that have been obtained at the age of 16 or later are considered. Do not send original certificates but be prepared to present the originals at the start of your studies should you become accepted to the study programme. Information related to your health shall be kept secret (Section 24, Act on the Openness of Government Activities).

Notification on granted individual arrangements

The UAS responsible for the individual arrangements in the entrance examination will contact you by e-mail before the entrance examination, to agree upon practical arrangements. If you are not satisfied with the arrangements stated in the announcement, please contact the UAS in question.

The announcement on individual arrangements for the entrance exam is exam-specific and valid only in that particular entrance exam. Individual arrangements that have been granted in advance for the second phase are valid only if the applicant receives an invitation to the second phase.

If you receive an invitation to the second phase of the International UAS Exam, please submit the decision on individual arrangements granted to you to the Admissions Services of the university of applied sciences that sent the invitation by 25 February 2022 at 15:00 (UTC/GMT+2).

Certificate-based selection: Matriculation Examination

All universities of applied sciences comply with the scoring models and principles of certificate-based selection. If you apply with a matriculation examination (Finnish or EB, IB and RP/DIA diploma) you can check scoring here (only in finnish).

For the certificate-based selection a threshold criteria for the English language test is at least grade C (advanced level) or grade M (basic level).

Student selection results

The student selection results of the joint application will be published by 3 June 2022 at the latest.

You will be sent an e-mail if you are offered a study place. You then have time until 15 July 2022 at 3:00 pm (Finnish time) to confirm the study place using the link included in the message or by logging in to My Studyinfo -service with online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID card.

Please notice that once you confirm the study place you cannot anymore accept any other study places leading to a higher education degree in Finland if the studies begin in the same academic term. The one-study-place-per-term-provision applies to higher education regardless of how the studies are provided. For example, if you have already accepted a study place offered to you in some direct application, you cannot then anymore accept a study place from the joint application if the study programme begins in the same academic term.

Appeals

If you believe there has been a mistake in the student selection and the admission criteria have not been applied correctly, you can make a written request for rectification within 14 days after the student selection results have been published.

The request for rectification must be addressed to the Examination Board of Häme University of Applied Sciences and sent to HAMK, PO Box 230, 13101 Hämeenlinna, Finland within 14 days after the student selection results have been published.

You can apply as a degree student to HAMK on the basis of open studies completed in a university of applied sciences in Finland.

Applicant who has an applicable higher education degree and two years of work experience after graduation and who has completed 10 credits (belonging to a 60 cr's degree) or 15 credits (belonging to a 90 cr's degree) applicable to the degree is eligible for Master's degree studies.

Right to study

If you are a student of HAMK and you would like to transfer your right to study to some other degree programme, please contact the Study Counsellor of the degree programme. Transferring from one degree programme to another is in general possible already during the first semester.

Students transferring from other Finnish university

If you want to have a transfer to HAMK you must have a valid right to study at a Finnish university. It is possible to apply for a transfer to the same or corresponding degree programme.

A university student that has the right to study for both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees can apply for a transfer only to Bachelor’s degree studies. The student must apply to Master’s degree studies through the normal admission procedures.

  • The right to study has started when you have enrolled as present for the first time.
  • You have been enrolled as present student for at least one year at the initial university. A Master’s degree student can transfer already after studying for one semester. Therefore it is recommended to apply during the semester when you want to begin your studies as a degree student.

Eligibility

HAMK can admit a student who have abandoned higher education degree studies and have maximum of

In addition, it is an advantage if the applicant has less than 60 ECTS credits (Bachelor’s Degree) or 30 ECTS credits Master’s Degree to be completed for the degree.
