Responsibility

The principles of responsibility guide all of HAMK’s operations toward the objectives of our strategy from a responsibility perspective.

Our principles of responsibility

1. Our impact is generated through education
and research

In addition to educating motivated professionals, HAMK’s core mission includes RDI activities, i.e. research, development and innovation activities.

  • We are committed to sustainability and communality.
  • Our goal is that HAMK is a pioneer of sustainable development, sustainable business renewal and internationalization in the region
  • We increase our handprint in dialogue and cooperation with our partners and networks regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • We are continuously developing our education towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Through this, our students gain the competences and capabilities necessary to promote positive change in the future
  • Our experts gear applied research and high-quality projects to promoting sustainability and solving wicked problems.
  • Our education and research are constantly evolving to meet the needs for renewal of society, and business and industry.

2. Our work is guided by environmental responsibility

HAMK is committed to tackling climate change and to environmentally responsible practices.

  • We are committed to reducing our environmental impact. We measure our ecological footprint.
  • We take the environmental impacts of our activities into account in our decision-making.
  • We renew our operations and use solutions that mitigate climate change.
  • We promote biodiversity.
  • We foster nature as a unique operating environment and source of well-being, also for future generations.

3. We are an inclusive place to both study and work in

Social responsibility applies to staff and students. Social responsibility is managed systematically.

  • We value every person and are proud of the diversity of our community.
  • The feeling of belonging to a community is vital, where everyone has the freedom to be who they are, and all are respected.
  • We promote equality and non-discrimination.
  • We do not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination.
  • We develop safe, healthy and accessible work and study environments.
  • Face-to-face encounters and co-creation are key operating methods in our community and with our partners.

4. We are a responsible and developing organisation

HAMK has set several targets for its administration that promote responsibility.

  • Our activities are ethically sustainable and transparent.
  • We secure our operating conditions and opportunities for development through sustainable leadership, stable economy and good administration.
  • We have a low hierarchy, and we trust people’s expertise.
  • Everyone follows the principle of continuous improvement in their work and competence.
  • We encourage continuous learning and experimenting with new ideas, aiming for justified and better solutions and practices.
  • We communicate openly and actively about our activities and engage in dialogue with our stakeholders.

Our sustainability reporting is based on the EU’s sustainability reporting standards, the ESG classification and the joint reporting framework for universities of applied sciences developed by the Rectors’ Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (Arene). Above all, however, it shows what responsibility and sustainability mean in our everyday work — in education, research and campus operations.
