WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

Are you interested in sustainable and smart design in fashion, footwear or glass and ceramics? Do you want to learn how to design ecologically and ethically produced products and services? Are you fascinated by Nordic design? The contemporary world is growing ever more environmentally conscious and technology advances with huge leaps every day. It is important that you as designer understand the importance of sustainable values and the challenges of circular economy. You will learn how to use and combine both traditional and modern techniques with design thinking and a strong creative and material-based mindset. You will study in a studio environment with modern facilities and earn deep understanding of the product and production. The studies include an active collaboration with businesses and a commercial focus in design. The staff have vast global networks.


WHAT WILL YOU BECOME?

There is a need for service and user experience design, where social media competence, marketing expertise and visualization expertise are combined with designer competence. In our design education you can choose your major subject in fashion, footwear or glass and ceramics design. After studies you will master all the steps from product design to manufacturing. Smart and sustainable design education enables you to work as a designer in companies in different fields and in the public sector, or act as an entrepreneur. Designers are increasingly setting up businesses and working in a diverse range of creative industries. Professional titles include for example: designer, product assistant, product developer, entrepreneur, project manager and buyer.

Are you interested in sustainable and smart design? Do you want to learn how to design ecologically and ethically produced products and services?

The contemporary world is growing ever more environmentally conscious and technology advances with huge leaps every day. It is important that design professionals understand the importance of green values, the challenges of circular economy and know how to use and combine both traditional and modern techniques. Service design know-how and design thinking combined with business principles know-how create a good foundation for today’s designer.

In design education you can choose your major subject in clothing, footwear or glass and ceramics design. After completing your studies you will master all the steps from product design to manufacturing.

Smart and sustainable design education provides the ability to work as a designer in companies in different fields and in public organizations, or act as an independent entrepreneur. There is demand for the service and user experience design, where social media competence, marketing expertise and visualization expertise are combined with designer competence. People with design education are increasingly setting up their own businesses and working in a diverse range of creative industries. Professional titles include: designer, entrepreneur, product assistant, product designer, product manager, buyer, project seller and project manager.

Eligibility

You can apply to a Bachelor’s degree programme at a university of applied sciences when you have completed:

  • the Finnish general upper secondary school syllabus and/or the Matriculation Examination
  • International Baccalaureate, German Reifeprüfung or European Baccalaureate Diploma
  • a Finnish upper secondary vocational qualification (120 credit units) or an equivalent previous vocational qualification with a minimum scope of 80 credit units
  • a Finnish post-secondary or higher vocational level diploma
  • further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification or an equivalent previous qualification
  • foreign education that provides eligibility to apply for higher education in the country in question.

Refugee or refugee-like situation

If the applicant is a refugee or in refugee-like situation and the qualifications cannot be proven through documentary evidence, the UAS can consider whether the applicant can be invited to the entrance exam even if the UAS does not use discretionary admission. The applicant must prove the refugee status by reference to a decision made by competent authority.

Required English language proficiency

Applicants English language skills will be tested in the entrance examinations/interviews and in the SAT-tests. No language skills certificates are required.

You will be informed about the student selection results by 20 December 2019 at the latest. If you are offered a study place you must confirm it by 10 July 2020 3:00 pm Finnish time.

Tuition fees

Non-EU/EEA students

As a non-EU/EEA-citizen you are required to pay tuition fees for Bachelor’s degree studies. 

The tuition fee must be paid at the time of confirming the study place. The fee must be paid at once and cannot be paid in installments. Please notice: tuition fees are charged directly by HAMK and should never be paid through third parties (i.e. educational agents).

You can be exempted from paying tuition fees if you:

  • have an EU Blue Card granted in Finland
  • have a continuous residence permit card in Finland, type A permit
  • have a permanent residence permit card in Finland, type P permit
  • have an EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland
  • have an EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence permit card in Finland (Type P-EU)

In order to be exempted from paying tuition fees, please attach a copy of one of the above-mentioned documents to your application at Studyinfo.fi. The document must be downloaded to your application within 7 days after submitting the online application.

EU/EEA students

There will be no tuition fee for EU/EEA citizens. In order to be exempted from paying tuition fees you need to attach one of the following documents to your application at Studyinfo.fi:

  • Passport or identity card to indicate the citizenship of EU/EEA/Switzerland (citizens of Finland are not required to provide proof of their citizenship as it will be verified from the population register)

Admission criteria

All applicants are required to do a portfolio and upload it as a pdf-file to their application at Studyinfo.fi. The instructions for making the portfolio are published on the degree programme's website on 1 October 2019.

The portfolio consists of two tasks. The first task is evaluated as passed/failed and the second task is graded 0-100. Applicants need to get at least 50 points out of 100 in order to pass the second task. Only applicants that have uploaded their portfolio to the online application by 24 November 2019 and passed both of the required tasks will move on in the student selection process.

Applicants that pass the portfolio stage of the selection process will be invited to an online interview. The interview is evaluated as passed/failed.

Instructions for making the portfolio

The portfolio must be uploaded to your application at www.studyinfo.fi at the latest by 24 November 2019 3:00 pm (Finnish time). The portfolio consists of two tasks. Applicants that pass the portfolio stage of the selection process will be invited to an online interview that will be on 4 December 2019. The invitation will be sent by e-mail. The interview is evaluated as passed/failed.

Student selection results

The student selection results will be published within two weeks after the interviews or after the SAT-test results (please notice: SAT-test results are not used in the student selections of all degree programmes) have arrived to the Admission Services.

You will be sent an e-mail if you are offered a study place. You then have time until 10 July 2020 3:00 pm Finnish time to confirm the study place. However, it is highly recommended to confirm the place as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for the immigration process (that for non-EU/EEA citizens may require as long as three to five months). Early confirmation ensures that you will not miss the start date of your studies.

You can confirm the study place by using the link included in the message or by logging in to My Studyinfo -service with online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID card.

Please notice that once you confirm the study place you cannot anymore accept any other study places leading to a higher education degree in Finland if the studies begin in the same academic term. The one-study-place-per-term-provision applies to higher education regardless of how the studies are provided. For example, if you accept a study place offered to you in this direct application, you cannot then anymore accept a study place from the joint application if the study programme begins in the same academic term.

The studies start in the end of August 2020.

Entrance examinations

All eligible applicants will be invited to the entrance examination. Detailed instructions and information will be given in the invitation letter. The invitation letters will be sent by e-mail. The entrance examination will be conducted on 7 April 2020 at Hämeenlinna University Centre.

Content of the entrance examination

The written entrance examination consists of several assignments that measure the applicant's motivation and suitability for the design sector, creative problem solving skills and technical and visual presentation skills. The applicant must pass all parts of the entrance examination.

The entrance examination is graded 0-100. Applicants need to get at least 50 points out of 100 in order to pass the examination.

Pre-reading materials

There is no pre-reading material.

Co-operating degree programmes

HAMK's Degree Programme in Smart and Sustainable Design is not in co-operation with any other degree programmes in terms of entrance examinations. If you wish to be admitted to this degree programme you need to participate in the entrance examination organized on 7 April 2020 at the Hämeenlinna University Centre.

Entrance examinations outside of Finland

HAMK does not organize entrance examinations outside of Finland in the joint application for higher education. If you wish to take the exam in your home country you should apply in the direct application to HAMK.

Special arrangements at entrance examinations

Print and fill in the Application for special arrangements and deliver it with the enclosures to the admissions office of each higher education institution you have applied to no later than 7 days after the application period has ended. For more information, consult the website(s) of the higher education institution(s) you have applied to. Your application need to have reached the higher education institution by 29 January, 2020, 3 p.m.

Should your need for individual arrangements emerge after the deadline, please deliver the application to the admissions office(s) as soon as possible.
NB! Exceptions to the deadlines and instructions regarding enclosures can occur. Always check the specific admission criteria of the programme you are applying to.

Required enclosures

Please enclose to your application copies of certificates that validate your need for individual arrangements (e.g. a doctor’s certificate or an equivalent statement on the type of disability/illness at hand or a statement of dyslexia or learning disability). If you are applying for support measures, e.g. additional time, because of dyslexia, a statement from a speech therapist, qualified special education teacher, psychologist familiar with dyslexia or a specialist doctor (e.g. children’s neurologist, neurologist or phoniatrist) should be enclosed. The statement should entail which support measures you need due to the dyslexia. The higher education institution may accept the equivalent decision from the Finnish matriculation examination board as long as the support measures you were offered are stated there.

How long the certificate or statement is valid, is assessed case by case depending on the durability of the disability, illness or learning disability. Statements of dyslexia are valid when they have been issued at 16 years of age or later. Do not send original copies of any statements or certificates. However, should you be admitted to a study place, be prepared to present the original copies when the studies commence. Information concerning the applicant’s health is confidential (JulkL 24§).

Notification on granted special arrangements

The higher education institution responsible for the entrance examination will contact you by e-mail or by post well before the exam date to inform you on the practical arrangements. If you are dissatisfied with the granted arrangements, contact the higher education institution in question.

The notification on granted individual arrangements only applies to the specified study programme/entrance examination and is valid only on the specified exam date.
