Tavoite
The goal of the course is to provide students with the tools they need to understand biotechnologies of the past and present to develop their future application.
Sisältö
In this course, you will identify your own interests and apply the cutting-edge technologies revolutionizing biotechnology to solve problems that matter to you. After an introduction to the exciting opportunities offered by biotechnology, you will apply lessons learned to solve problems that are meaningful to you. Students from different study paths are welcome: creatives, entrepreneurs, and technologists.
Sisällön aikataulutus
Students will be expected to, on their own schedule:
1) Introduction to the biological sciences
2) Introduction to technologies in the biological sciences
3) Integrating science, technology, and other "ways of knowing" to solve real world problems
4) From the past towards future biotechnologies
Opetusmenetelmät
The course is delivered online and is designed to adapt to students' schedules. The course only requires mandatory online attendance in a weekly discussion group. The aim of the discussion group is to synthesize the weeks' material through a series of short exercises with real-world implications (e.g. working in a simulated workplace in the biotechnology sector). Discussion groups will be formed based on the students' availabilities and interests which will be assessed via a short questionnaire that will be sent two weeks prior to the start of class.
1) Listen to a weekly lecture that will be delivered online Sunday evening (attendance is not mandatory, the lecture will be recorded and available on the course's online Learn-Moodle platform).
2) Read the assigned weekly materials (when possible, recordings of the reading assignments will be made available on the course's online Learn-Moodle platform).
3) Synthesize the material by participating in a weekly discussion (mandatory attendance) of the week's lecture and reading materials. Discussion groups will be formed and planned based on the schedules of the registered students.
4) Implement the lessons learned to solve a problem in a simulated work environment.
Oppimateriaali
Learning materials and recommended literature will be provided at the beginning of the course.
